Barack Obama for Net Neutrality

Network Neutrality
Obama discusses Senators Snowe and Dorgan's legislation to protect network neutrality on the internet.

---
"It is because the Internet is a neutral platform that I can put out this podcast and transmit it over the Internet without having to go through any corporate media middleman. I can say what I want without censorship or without having to pay a special charge.

But the big telephone and cable companies want to change the Internet as we know it. They say that they want to create high speed lanes on the Internet and strike exclusive contractual agreements with Internet content providers for access to those high speed lanes. Everyone who cannot pony up the cash will be relegated to the slow lanes."

SL Club for the Disabled Honored - Wheelies Picks up Prestigious Award

CLUB FOR DISABLED HONOURED
Wheelies picks up prestigious award
By: Jaager Himmel The Avastar 25. Jul. 2008, 16:49
A UNIQUE disability-themed nightclub in Second Life has been awarded a prestigious award.

Wheelies was founded by Simon Stevens, an independent disability consultant who has cerebral palsy.

Like most clubs, it holds events with live DJs and artists every day of the week. But unlike elsewhere, the venue offers disabled people a place to hang out and have fun as well as providing informal peer support. The club is encircled with a boardwalk, perfect for wheelchair races, in the middle of the water. At Wheelies you won't find any stairs, but there are lots of ramps and a few elevators.

Wonderful recognition

Since it opened, Wheelies has helped more than 5,000 people from over 30 countries, both disabled and able-bodied. Stevens said: “I started Wheelies as a bit of fun but it developed into a support group which is very important to people across the world.”

The club picked up the ‘Revolutionary Award’ at the first UK Catalyst Awards for social technology and action, which was held yesterday. Stevens added: “This award is a wonderful recognition of how new virtually-based social technology can make a real change to real people.”

The Wheelies nightclub is on the Second Ability sim, which also includes the Steven's centre for disability training.

"Sly Fox" by Nas on The Colbert Report

The Colbert Report gets better every single day right at the most important time in the world. I am a FIRM believer that if Obama is elected the nation and the entire world will take a turn and start healing to become a better place. I can't stress how important it is to make sure McCain is NOT PRESIDENT!

The Fox Noise Channel is a propeganda network, which has money wrapped in internet too. I don't want money corrupting information on the internet. EVER.

Check out the whole episode HERE

EDIT: Ouch, looks like Comedy Central took down the video of Nas' performance :O(

Here's one from the show though.

And here's the new tune "Sly Fox"

--

"Sly Fox" by Nas

[Intro]

So we look at what's going on -- this as an EXTREME aggression, um
I'm also hearing about it from EVERYWHERE!
It's-it's on the islands, it's on the continent, it's here: it's everywhere!
And this is, if you will, a WAR -- An all out assault by...

[Verse 1:NaS]

The sly fox
Cyclops
We locked
In the idiot box
The video slots
Broadcast
The Waco Davidian plots
They own YouTube, Myspace
When this ignorant shit gon' stop?
They monopolizing news
Your views
And the channel you choose
Propaganda
Visual cancer
The eye
In the sky
Number five
On the dial
secret agenda
Frequency antenna
Doctor mind bender
Remote control
soul
Controller
Your brain holder
Slave culture
Game's over
What's a Fox characteristic?
Slick shit
Sensin'
Misinformation
Pimp the station
Over stimulation
Reception
Deception
Comcast digital Satan
The Fox has a bushy tail
And Bush tells
Lies and Foxtrots
So I don't know what's real

[Chorus]

Watch what you watchin'
Fox keeps feeding us toxins
Stop sleeping
Start thinking
Outside of the box and
Unplug from The Matrix doctrine
But watch what you say Big Brother is watchin'

Watch what you watchin'
Fox keeps feeding us toxins
Stop sleeping
Start thinking
Outside of the box and
Unplug from The Matrix doctrine
But watch what you say Fox 5 is watchin'

[Verse 2:NaS]

The Fear Factor got you all rattled up
O' Reilly
Oh really?
No rally needed
I'll tie you up
Network for child predators, settin' 'em up
Myspace pimps, hoes, and sluts
Ya'll exploit rap culture, then ya'll flip on us
And you own the post, and ya'll shit on us
What is they net worth?
They gon' try to censor my next verse?
Throw 'em off the roof neck first
While I'm clicking my cursor
Reading blogs about the pressure they put on Universal
It gets worse while I'm clicking my mouse
While they kickin' my house
They figured us out
Why a nigga go south
It's either he caught a body, no sleep they watchin'!
I watch CBS
And I See B.S.!
Tryin' to track us down with GPS
Make a nigga wanna invest in PBS

[Chorus]

Watch what you watchin'
Fox keeps feeding us toxins
Stop sleeping
Start thinking
Outside of the box and
Unplug from The Matrix doctrine
But watch what you say Big Brother is watchin'

Watch what you watchin'
Fox keeps feeding us toxins
Stop sleeping
Start thinking
Outside of the box and
Unplug from The Matrix doctrine
But watch what you say Fox 5 is watchin'

[Verse 3:NaS]

They say I'm all about murder-murder and kill-kill
But what about Grindhouse and Kill Bill?
What about Cheney and Halliburton? (Halliburton?)
The backdoor deals
On oil fields
How's NaS the most violent person?
Ya'll don't know talent if it hit you
Bringin' up my criminal possession charges with a pistol (pistol)
I use Viacom
As my firearm
And let the lyrics split you
Who do you rely upon?
They shoot shells at Leviathan
I'm dealing with the higher form
F**k if you care how I write a poem?
Only Fox that I love was the red one
Only black man that Fox loves is in jail or a dead one!
Red rum
Political bedlam
Don't let the hype into your eyes and ear drum
Murdoch on Fox
Not 18 with Barracas
And he hate Barack cause
He march with the marchers

[Outro]

I pledge allegiance to the fair and balanced truth.
Not the biased truth
Not the liar's truth
But the highest truth
I will not be deceived
nor will I believe
In the Propaganda
I will not fall for the Okey-Doke
I am tuned-in

[NaS]

Watch, cause they're watching
Watch what you're watching

Better watch, cause they're watching
Watch what you're watching

Me-Me-Media
Misleading ya

Watch what you're watching

Doubledown's Dinky Rants - Second Life is Dead?! NO, You just have no Second Life!

"Doubledown's Dinky Rants"
... a rant that may be mildly to severly unimportant ( with a sarcastic humorous tone ) but will also hopefully point out an underlining issue that may want to be considered for the future.

Recently I've been noticing a few people talking about how "Second Life is dead." The quick links to their articles are not HERE, HERE, & HERE, which I'm not going to bother to link to.
That's pretty funny to me how, yet again, for the 3rd or 4th or 5th summer in a row, some journalist, or some educationalist, or mostly just a statistics firm trying to make their mark decides to contrive an article about Second Life.

It is obvious to any frequent SL resident that these stories about SL being dead are based on looking at a month or so of some LL stats... AND THATS ALL! It's not a SL resident that IS in fact inworld, most every day, alive... not dead.... ALIVE!.

So... in my opinion... Second Life isn't dead.... If you think it is, then YOUR Second Life is dead, but not everyone else's. Summer stats showing premium member declines mean NOTHING! It's Summertime. People go outside. People leave college. Quite frankly, who wants to play Second Life when the birds are outside chirping and its a great day for the beach?!

I would advise research firms to stop writing about the end of Second Life, because when you do, it becomes clear you don't use Second Life, and have no clue what you're writing about. By doing this, you discredit yourself and everything else you write. Why don't you spend a year or two living with the natives before you write about us and our world.

Conference Report: California Bar IP Section “Entertainment & Media” (and Stan Lee!)
July 16th, 2008 by Thayer Preece
Via www.VirtuallyBlind.com

"Last month, attorneys from across the state of California gathered in the posh Beverly Hills Hotel, vacation home of the stars, for the Intellectual Property Section of the California State Bar’s conference on Entertainment & Media. (With special guest appearance by Stan Lee!) The panels included one on the law and virtual worlds. (That wasn’t the one with Stan Lee.) The virtual worlds panel consisted of in-house attorneys from Fox, Disney, and Sony, and was moderated by James Nguyen, an attorney who represented Marvel in their lawsuit against NCsoft, makers of the game City of Heroes. (But did I mention… Stan Lee?)"

Community Events During the SLCC 2008 - Tampa, Florida - September 5th - 7th, 2008

posted by Nexeus Fatale

"I have mentioned before, that the The Future United, are not responsible for community events. Instead we encourage community members to host gatherings, events, and functions however they feel fit. We welcome anyone to host and have their own event and tell us where and when it will be.

We’ve created a community event page which will include resident events, locations, and the details of each event. Do note, that some events will be limited only to those who have registered for the convention.

At the moment, we can confirm that Stroker Serpentine of Eros will be hosting his own Stroker’s Ball on Saturday from 9pm - 3am at Banana Joe’s in Tampa. More information regarding that event and others will follow shortly."

Second Inventory - Back up and Store your Second Life creations on your Harddrive

In the height of inventory loss, content deletion, and one's own potential to press the delete button accidentally, I wanted to give a mention to this product:

Second Inventory
http://www.secondinventory.com/

Second Inventory allows you to save all your creations directly to your hard drive. This includes, Skins, Textures, Scripts and even complex multi-prim objects! Your precious time and investments in Second Life® content can now be securely protected off world.

I have not used it myself, so I cannot give a rating, but I did want to give these guys some business, because, if it is what it says, it's AWESOME! As Open Simulators and co-connecting virtual worlds become more intertwined, this backup storage program will be an amazing breakthrough. It also seems to be a great tool to completely make an object you made in Second Life 100% yours. Once your creation is saved out of Second Life, then even if your SL account is banned, you still retain your intellectual property.

Hopefully someone who checks out the program can comment here on their thoughts.

‘Heroes/Lost' Producer Recognizes Benefits of BitTorrent

‘Heroes/Lost' Producer Recognizes Benefits of BitTorrent
Written by Ernesto on July 02, 2008

Half of the people who use BitTorrent do so to download TV-shows. Some episodes of popular shows such as ‘Heroes’ and ‘Lost’ get up to 10 million downloads. We had a chat with Jesse Alexander, the co-producer of both ‘Heroes’ and ‘Lost’, and asked him what his thoughts are on BitTorrent, piracy and the future of TV.

Jesse Alexander has co-produced and written for both ‘Heroes’ and ‘Lost’, two of the most successful TV-series today. In addition to millions of viewers on TV, both shows are are also extremely popular on BitTorrent. In fact, millions of people share a single episode and this can go on to 10 million downloads per episode.

One could argue that their availability on BitTorrent actually helped ‘Lost’ and ‘Heroes’ to build a stronger fanbase. With torrents, no-one has to miss an episode anymore which keeps the fans more engaged. So called “pirates” advertise the shows to their friends, or write about it on their blogs. Accordingly, when we asked Jesse Alexander whether he thinks that BitTorrent might have helped to reach a broader audience, he answered with a clear cut “Yes”.

Not that Jesse wants everybody to get the shows off BitTorrent, but he said that it certainly signals that there is a market for on-demand and interactive TV. “People watching shows such as Lost and Heroes on BitTorrent is the present world reality,” Jesse told TorrentFreak. TV networks have to recognize this, give their viewers more ways to interact with the shows, and find ways to generate revenue from every member of the global audience.”

“It’s the same for music artists. The reality is, people share music. Artist now make money by driving people to concerts, through community websites, and by offering exclusive events. TV networks are focusing too much on one exclusive product, instead of building a community. This is a mistake I think.”

The success of Heroes on BitTorrent didn’t pass by the cast of the show unnoticed either. “The cast and the people behind the scenes have all been talking about it,” Jesse said. As an example he mentioned last year’s promotional tour in France, where the actors were recognized by hundreds of fans, even though the show had not even premiered on TV yet.

Alexander has hit the nail on the head. This is in fact one of the main reasons why shows like ‘Heroes’ are so popular on filesharing networks. It can take up to six months after the US premiere before these shows are aired in Europe, Australia and other parts of the world. Jesse agreed that this is indeed one of the major causes of piracy. “This gap is something that is certainly going to change in the future,” he added.

Jesse went on to say that in the near future, thanks to the Internet, the viewers of TV-shows will see more interactive components and alternate realities they can participate in. The future of TV will be more international, with real interaction, and shows will be more and more integrated into the core part of an online community.

When we asked Jesse if he has ever downloaded TV-shows off BitTorrent, he told us: “I can’t confirm or deny, but I’m familiar with all kind of new technologies.” I guess we all know what he’s trying to say.

It is no surprise that Jesse is more positive towards new technologies than some others in the entertainment industry. Last week we reported on the upcoming “Pirate TV” show that he is working on, together with Matt Mason, the author of ‘The Pirate’s Dilemma’.

“Matt’s book needs to get a broader audience,” said Jesse. “We want to discuss the negative and the positive side of piracy, and place things in a broader historical context. We want to start a real conversation about the future of intellectual property.”

We’re happy to join the debate, what about you?

My personal take: I love bittorrent. It is fair....and 100% legal ... the way I use it:
I have my TV on with the shows that I WANT to watch, but it's on mute because I'm stuck in Second Life constantly ensconced in the metaverse. ....so, effecively, the advertising has still played for me during the broadcast, but I didn't pay attention. I need to use bittorrent to watch the show. It's the poor-man's TIVO. Hey, I'm not massively spreading, I just need to know if they get off the damn island and where did the island go and what is that smoke and where is Jacob....... just.... If, us internet users, promise to watch the advertising associated with the program, can't we just download it and watch it later? or OVER AND OVER?!?!?!
Thank you to some artists that understand when fans crave. Its a devotion. It's not stealing.

Doubledown's Dinky Rant - SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion

Continuing my approach to adjust my blog, I preset the first of many

"Doubledown's Dinky Rants"
... a rant that may be mildly to severly unimportant ( with a sarcastic humorous tone ) but will also hopefully point out an underlining issue that may want to be considered for the future.

SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion was held June 23rd. .... I would have loved to have informed ya about it. In fact, I would have loved to have known about it. Unforunately I don't receive word until I find out about it July 3rd

Thank you Phoenix Psaltery of Metaverse Messenger for covering the event.
Thank you Sansarya Caligari of Second Life News Network for covering the event.

Now, given, in my all new dinky rants I'm allowed to be a conceited asshole so my question to the SL universe is: "Why didn't anyone inform me?" I read all of the SL blogs & forums daily & check the news. I also have many friends that were speakers at the event. Or even friends of people that were at the event? Was I living under a rock that day? So why the hell didn't I hear about it? I'm sure people are going to show me online locations and inworld stuff that shows the prepromotion of this panel discussion... but I sure never saw it. /end rant

My point is that the SL metaverse is a massive overwhelming salad bowl of constant happenings. You can't follow all of the events all of the time however you can always receive the advanced event notice, the invite, or the promotion associated with the event. If I am not receiving your promotional information, other people are not either. Every event, every performance, every seminar, every discussion... if you want the people present that you want there, you need to make them aware. If you are at an event and you see someone that should be there, but is not, IM them and invite em over :O)

"Lost" in Second Life The SL-Lost Project

Recently, this video was discovered off the coast of the mainland in Second Life:

Want to visit SL "Lost" Island and investigate, & possibly save the world?
Click these numbers below:
4 - 8 - 15 - 16 - 23 - 42

You know me, I AM DOUBLEDOWN, I must save the world. (Or possibly save the cheerleaders...but I digress) I'm headed over to the Swan Hatch now. Also, check the video, and pause it at 1:55. I think that might be a clue to join the game.

Photos to come VERY soon.

-----
About the team that created the SL-Lost project

SL-LOST came to be because of a mutual interest in creating an entirely new fan base, one that meets to discuss episodes of LOST in a virtual setting. It is a combination of people from all over the world with two things in common: Second Life and being fans of the show LOST.

In May of 2007 several LOST fans began building the virtual island of LOST in Second Life, after a slow start and with the determination of two of the groups original members Campetin Hoorenbeek and Samantha Kuncoro, the group became better organized and with a handful of people were able to see 55 % of what they wanted for the island completed. When, suddenly at the end of October 2007 the original financial owner of the island disappeared with out giving his group any warning or explanation. All seemed lost for the handful of SL-LOST members that remained devoted to the idea of creating this new virtual fan base.

In late November the original island was opened back up for 24 hours in order for members of the group to collect the items they made. That day Campetin took video footage of the island and put together a video showcasing what was done. The idea was to attract new members to SL-LOST, with the hope they may be interested in contributing financially, so at some point the group would be able purchase new land and rebuild the island. At the same time Campetin and Samantha began working on this website, and once the video was done Campetin put it on several web sites. Campetin and Samantha also found a new place in Second Life to open a meeting area, which became SL-LOST Headquarters. This enabled fans to have a place to meet and discuss LOST. A month before the season 4 premier they started hosting events for the group, discussing various characters and story lines. At this time a wonderful thing began to happen, the word about SL-LOST and the island they once had as well as their website and group events started getting noticed.

More and more LOST fans began joining SL-LOST and donating their time, money, and ideas in order to see the dream of a new virtual LOST island realized. It is because of the group’s growth and all the wonderful support that now SL-LOST has begun to reconstruct a portion of the island they once had, starting with the Swan Station or better known as the hatch. This time because of the great amount of help and support, it is even better than the original, and there are plans to expand.

Campetin and Samantha would like to especially thank Emma Nowhere, Keith Kendall, Boosh Lykin, Van Boiblanc, Madeleine Broome, Jiggy Shepard, Ainee Kohime, Josephine Fayray, Zico Handrick (thanks for the amazing photos!), Pharen Mayako and Kat2Kit for their great skills and support. They would also like to thank all of the SL-LOST members and anyone else they may have forgotten.

If you have any question please email us to sl_lost@hotmail.com

How many avatars does it take...??

Did the Second Life Musicians save TheSixtyOne.com?

This is a hard story to follow. Its sort of complex. So, hopefully everyone involved can chime in my comments to add knowledge to this.

Here's the scoop the best I can explain it:

on Thesixtyone.com there are forums.
This was posted:
http://www.thesixtyone.com/#http://www.thesixtyone.com/forum/topic/1794/

This offended many of the users of SL that are also users of thesixtyone.
I, personally stated it here: IM DONE WITH THE61

But then I posted this thread on their forums:
http://www.thesixtyone.com/forum/topic/1820/
It's over 70 replies.... and all of the SL members of thesixtyone are already soured and have left. But I think I got the chance to hit a grand slam for us, which perhaps saved the fate of the website.

I don't know if there's any point now. I think the damage was done and Second Life residents are in most part not in support of thesixtyone anymore.... but I'm glad I got to leave with my mark. I think it was because of my final thread that the website removed their forums.
I don't want to take credit. It was a whole series of events, and I layed the icing on the cake at the right time.

So, its your decision if you want to continue to use thesixtyone or not. I am thrilled that I did receive a direct response and action from the webmasters. To me, that said a lot. I will see how thesixtyone site plays out. I'm not leaving, and maybe soon again I will be proud to promote the site... I think they are back on the right path.

ADDED FOOTNOTE: this is so confusing.... the cliff notes are:
SL musicians had a problem with thesixtyone
SLMC is a forum where I can post info and links
SLMC - That's the Second Life Music Community! AWESOME!!!!!!
...so it's confusing... I used links to posts on the SLMC forums in regards to thesixtyone.
... there is NOOO issue with SLMC.... this is all about thesixtyone.
