On April 18th, 2009, Club Republik will be celebrating a new sim build and welcoming new owner Amanda Shinji into the Republik family by throwing a launch party featuring some of the biggest names in the Second Life music scene! Coinciding with the Second Life event will be the launch of the new clubrepublik.com, designed to take the Republik experience beyond the boundaries of Second Life and out onto the greater internet.

Club Republik was founded in April 2006 by Sable Sunset and Lina Pussycat on the Butler sim, and was one of the first clubs in Second Life to feature live electronica performances. In early 2007, Joseph Lian joined Sable and Lina as a club owner, and in September of that year, Republik moved to its own sim, the island of NuRepublik. Since the beginning, Club Republik has been focused on two things: music, and the people who love it. Fostering a sense of community has always been paramount for Republik, providing guests with a place that's all about the music - no spam, camping, or contests.

The new clubrepublik.com will take this one step further, providing a place for music lovers across the internet and around the world to connect, share ideas and create inspirations. Visitors can keep track of upcoming events, interact on the forums, listen to the club stream, and even chat with other club patrons via IRC without being logged in to Second Life. Bringing music lovers together is what Club Republik is all about.

The Nu Republik & The Nu Republik Website

www.ClubRepublik.com

The History

Club Republik – the club – opened within the virtual world of Second Life in April 2006 and has since established a cult following among clubbers worldwide.

The name Republik was chosen for two reasons: It is a reference to the idealogy that Philip Rosedale holds of Second Life being a country seperate and above cultural and geographic boundaries; and combines the similar concept that music and specifically the clubbing sub-culture transcends social classes and governmental disagreements to unite people from all nations and walks of life.

Having celebrated its 1st Birthday this year, the venue remains at heart of the brand as it’s where the story began and has also been the catalyst for the company’s further brand ventures and extensions.

Inspired by the 90's UK dance and rave culture Sable Sunset, Club Republik's visionary and one of it's founders (alongside Lina Pussycat), opted for a design based upon a deposed government's abandoned luxury building partly in response to an emerging trend of 'dark-future' fashion within that particular virtual community, and partly due to the politicised anti-government attitude embodied in the dominant clubbing environment of the early 90’s.

The Vision

When Club Republik was created, it was done with a very clear goal in mind: to provide an accessable, high-quality, high performance virtual venue that enabled music fans access to the music they adored and the DJs that loved to play and produce it. And of course supply this in a venue like nothing ever seen before in a virtual world to create an experience as close to a night out in a real life club as possible. This is an acheivement the venue can still boast today.

This vision has become ingrained into the Club Republik philosophy and, as the brand now enables music fans worldwide access to their favourite music through an increasing number of channels, influences every aspect of the brand.

Since opening Club Republik has been hailed as 'The heart and soul of the virtual dance scene' as DJ input and musical output has always concentrated primarily on the many forms of electronica. As dance music has evolved, the club output has consistently been at the forefront of the scene with its DJ line up and musical policy delivering over and above the clubbing call of duty.

Club Republik is a venue that not only started a unique brand but also created Second Life's clubbing movement as we know it today.

The Goal

It is our aim for Club Republik to be held up as an example of what clubbing should be like in Second Life, and in virtual worlds beyond SL in general. It's our goal to raise the profile of virtual music venues across the metaverse as a viable alternative when attemding a RL club or music venue is not an option. As a result we have even provided consulting services to other virtual venues that share our dream, and to real life companies interested in online club culture. We have also been featured in several real-world publications about the music scene in virtual worlds (including real life club industry publications), and served as the venue for a nationally televised music event.

For us it is always the experience of the music lover attending the venue that is paramount, rather than what profits can be made from a business such as ours. At all times we try to maintain a sense of family in Club Republik, staff and guests alike (in fact, this 'family' atmosphere is one of the first things stressed to new employees), and it's important to us that although we each have a sense of responsibility to the guests, what we do stays fun for all of us. After all, no-one comes to a virtual world looking for job they hate - that's what real life is for! :D
The Website

As the scene in Second Life developed the owners of Club Republik identified a growing online need - a place for music lovers that inhabit virtual worlds to congregate and share their experiences, and a place for virtual music venues to develop a true community between themselves in the spirit of working collectively to promote the virtual music scene.

Firstly the site is intended to serve as a central place, away from the confusion of virtual world-dependant search and event facilities, where venues and artists can communicate directly with the music fans that attend their events, offer special promotions, and get feedback on what the guests at their venues and events like and dislike.

Secondly, it's a place for those virtual venues that share a similar ethos to Club Republik, and the artists that perform in them, to share what they're doing and their ideas to grow the community with other venue owners.

As a bridge between the two, Club Republik has developed the Club Republik Affiliate Scheme, for which this site also serves as a central base. The aim of the scheme is to provide virtual venues with the technology to get information about themselves to their guests, provide easier means to manage their venues, and to promote the ideals given above to the wider virtual music community.

Doubledown Tandino in URB magazine!!!!

Taken from URB magazine - June 2007

It’s a typical Friday night at the club. You take your best helicopter, loweing it into the water, where it converts automatically to a submarine, before docking it on the roof of the night club. With a fl ick of the wrist, your ride has vanished, neatly put away until later, and your clothes instantly change to something more stylish for the evening–and then you head inside. The DJ, from New York, is spinning to a full house of people—the robot from Amsterdam, the seven-foot-tall werewolf from London, the ninja from Oakland, the angels on the bar from Tokyo. There’s a bouncer at the door, too. He’s a heavily tattooed Stormtrooper and he carries a big railgun.

If any of this sounds surreal, it’s not. For any of the 5.5 million people who log in to the virtual world known as Second Life, it’s another day at any one of the dozens of virtual nightclubs. The world, often called “the grid,” is a video game-like environment whose locations have been created entirely by its residents. Whether it’s a nightclub or a shopping mall, a war zone or a racetrack, the options available to socialize virtually are limitless. Nearly every interest is covered, from the sublime to the downright freaky—it’s there.Much of the difference between a virtual world and a typical video game is who controls and creates the content, as well as concrete goals and objectives. You’d be hard-pressed to fi nd a place where a real-life DJ can dominate the streets with a turntable in a place like Liberty City or San Andreas, the settings for Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Having a virtual space to entertain, party and promote is something celebrated by many enthusiasts and pros alike. DJ Doubledown Tandino—the pseudonym of Baltimore-based DJ Brad Reason who spins at real life venues like XS Baltimore—is also in demand for virtual clubs inside of Second Life. One virtual venue where Doubledown performs is Club Republik, a year and a half old nightclub, whose musical offerings include a variety of electronic and rock genres. Republik’s staff is made up of real life music producers, promoters and avid club enthusiasts who work closely in this virtual space, while being geographically separated in the real world.

Elsewhere, in the massively futuristic and fictitious Saijo City, Club 2025, a private, for-hire nightclub set in a rundown warehouse, can be found just up the street from Talib Kweli’s official brownstone apartment. In the same neighborhood are large crates of music where visitors can listen to a variety of known and unknown hip-hop artists, such as Snoop Dogg, Blackalicious, Beeda Weeda and Planet Asia.

Could the future of clubbing take place in an imaginary place such as this? Could we learn to socialize in a place that’s a hybrid between MySpace and Xbox LIVE? With increasing appearances and performances by artists such as Jay-Z and Chamillionaire, and an increasing richness and variety in the soundtracks of traditional video games, the crossover could be happening right now.

We’ve seen the mix of music and video gaming with such titles like Def Jam: Icon, a street fighting title that fuses hip-hop music, culture and lifestyle into the gameplay. And in Second Life, a completely freestyle universe, the indies and majors walk and talk and club (or fly or parachute or swim) together.

Talib Kweli’s binary brownstone has five floors where guests can watch his latest video, play pool, shoot darts or head up to the rooftop where there’s a full stage and plenty of room to dance. And while you’re standing up there, take a moment and look off into the horizon. You might see someone else’s submarine-helicopter rising up out of the nearby river, as the pilot and their passengers head to the next jumpin’ club.
