Top 5 Augmented Reality Business Cards

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer.

New World Notes Advertises IMVU Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar* on Article About Second Life Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar*

I'm so confused.... this is a screen capture of New World Notes, showing a screen capture of a Second Life webpage. On that Second Life page is an ad for an IMVU ad featuring a blue Avatar (to coincide with the movie "Avatar"). Ironically, on the New World Notes page happened to be another IMVU ad featuring the same blue Avatar.

I've got the Avatar blues. All these blue ads makes me finally want to click on that big-breasted Evony ad (which is probably showing up to the right hand side of my blog)

Business of Music in the Metaverse (via Pixelsandpolicy.com)

Zak Claxton and the Business of Music in the Metaverse
via Pixels and Policy

Molaskeys_0509
Zak Claxton: Live in Second Life

Could major radio stations soon be playing the music of artists best known for their Second Life avatars?
If one well-known Metaverse rocker has his way, the tunes that have players lining up in the virtual world will soon find their way into a real-world album release.

Zak Claxton is a big deal in Second Life. His live music performances and audience-pleasing style have over the years grown into a true fan following. So when Claxton had to decide whether to release his first real-world album using his real name or the Claxton nomme de Metaverse, the choice was easy.
Pixels and Policy spoke with Claxton to find out why virtual music is bringing him real recognition.

Synthetic Solo Artist

Claxton is one of a growing number of avatars turning the expansive Metaverse into a stage for their passions and talents. From heavily publicized art showings to lectures on economics, real-world entrepreneurs are unleashing their creativity and expertise on the virtual frontier.

Claxton's muse is the guitar, and he has courted the possibility of turning his Second Life performances into a real-world album from an early stage. In the real world, Claxton helped produce the successful albums of other performers while engaging in his Second Life hobby.

"The mesh of reality and SL came when I made the decision to record and release the album as Zak Claxton," Claxton told Pixels and Policy. "I've built a nice-sized global audience that would never have been possible as an independent singer-songwriter." Claxton is proud to say that more listeners know him as Zak Claxton than as his real-life persona.
Three years after his entry into Second Life, the virtual guitarist has a mastered CD and a scheduled a December 11, 2009 release date for his first record, "Zak Claxton."

Taking Virtual Music Global

In 2008, Wagner James Au of New World Notes reported on blues performer Von Johin, an avatar that landed a record deal through boutique firm Reality Entertainment.
At the time, Johin was one of the biggest musical draws in Second Life. His music continues to draw huge crowds at Muse Isle, and Johin's three-week "hiatus" led to a well-attended three hour "farewell set."

Claxton follows Johin by recording solely using a Second Life name: "Everything I'm doing musically now, in both real life and in virtual worlds and all over the web, is under the Zak Claxton name," Claxton told us. "It's less confusing for my audience, and the songs I'm currently performing have all been created while I've been performing as Zak.
The release of Claxton's eponymous debut album will almost certainly have a heavy Second Life presence, and if the growing popularity of digital musicians continues apace with the growth of virtual worlds, major record labels may soon see commercial potential in artists like Claxton.

As artists like Zak Claxton and Von Johin break through the distribution barrier of real world music by building an audience in the metaverse, the observer is left to wonder how long is left until established real-world performers bring their music and production teams to Second Life for virtual performances on a large scale.

Second Life Music can Equal Success and Profit - Part 2: The Organization

In part 2 of "Second Life Music can Equal Success and Profit" - I want to discuss the organization of people that come together to create a successful music event inworld.

I discussed the possible goals of a live music show in Part 1. Now I will help formulate the individual roles and planning elements involved in creating a larger scale event with a high expectation, quality performer, and support team... the organization. By the time Part 3 rolls around ("How to create a profitable SL music venue and music event"), we'll have a good sense about the roles people play in a successful functioning music venue as well as the goals of each person involved.

(draft. updated 6/17)

The Potential Positions to Combined Show
The people pieces of organizing a SL music event:

(Let me preface this by saying that each crew member of a venue/performer/event production team usually takes on multiple roles, and sometimes ALL of the roles. As an inworld music organization grows, more people will jump on board to support. At the same time, keep in mind that a successful music production & event can also be as small as one person, performing shows, on their land, and handling any responsibilities on their own.)

Venue Owner - The venue owner (the one that owns the land the music venue is located) in SL usually plays one of four roles. The responsibilities are vast depending on how much the land owner(s) want to be involved. The land of a music venue owner types are:

1) not involved) A silent business partner that simply owns the land. This person or company would hire the main venue creator and producer to make the venues and events happen.
1b) not involved but supportive) This is the friendly land owner who has no involvement in the development of the show, but enjoys supporting the music venue and comes to shows & helps.
2) involved) A land owner or a company that owns land who's primary focus is the business, and an aspect of that being music venue(s). The company representative would be considered the land/venue owner, and plays a moderate management role in the events and shows.
3) highly involved) equally involved with a producer or general management.
4) highest level of involvement) lead producer and head manager (CEO) of their entire venue and project including the land.

Venue General Manager and/or Event Producer - If the owner of the land isn't producing the shows, then there is the role of the main GM & event producer for the venue. This person generally has all the responsibility and also delegates responsibilities. In most smaller venue operations, the GM is the owner.

Venue Talent Booker/Scheduler/Manager - If the venue owner or venue GM choose, they may decide to divide up the responsibilities of scheduling the performers and scheduling the venue staff. For larger scale events and team effort venues/clubs, usually the person that books and handles the artistic talent (the musician, dj, act) is a different job position than the person that manages and schedules the staff (hosts, dancers, security). The Venue Talent Manager maintains the roster of performers and plays a large role as producer & promoter of the show and event.

Venue Manager/Host Manager - As mentioned above, because the talent manager of a venue has many high-expectation responsibilities, usually there is the job position of a Venue Manager. This is someone that maintains the staff roster, schedules and coordinates with the planning of events, and also usually maintains the day to day running of a venue. If a venue isn't highly staffed, sometimes the venue manager can play the role of a promoter, host, or event security.

Venue Host - (which includes all venue staff and volunteers, dancers, security, etc) This is a crucial role. Although the job position is not overlooked in SL (every venue has hosts) the quality of a host can make or break an event. A professional host is the key to an event's success. They operate as a promoter, wrangler, info distributor, group adder, pitchman, performer support, and so much more. It is imperative to have quality host(s) working any live music event. There are many times where the role of host is handled by the management.

Venue Sponsor - The person, company, or brand that pitches in money, advertising support, or in-kind trade to the venue. In exchange the sponsor receives posted signage, branding, and representation at the venue. This is a great source & option for any venue that needs help covering the costs (more on this in Part 3).

Performer - This person or group is "the show", "the performance." Sometimes they could be considered "the event", but not always. A great performer in SL never limits themselves to just this role. They may also help with the venue, or even be the venue management. The performer can be their own promoter, or manager of the promotion team.

Performer's Agent / Manager - The agent/manager will work with the performer to help create more opportunities, and also guide the performer's career. This role could be a company agency that has a roster of performers as well as a roster of venues, talent buyers, and clients. This role could also be one person, who operates to assist the performer with whatever needs come up. A good agent or manager will do promotion & networking for the performer as well.

Performer's Street Team - This is a collective of people, usually volunteers and fans that want to help and support the performer. They don't get paid, nor have any obligations, but their continued help bringing people to events and spreading the word for the performer is monumental.

Performer Sponsor - This is a company that pays the performer (either in money or trade) to represent the company during events. This is a great way that a venue can book an expensive performer. If the performer's sponsor pays the performer's rate to play, then the venue can run events and book shows with a lesser budget.

I am still working on elements I would like to add to this post. Please add input in the comments and I will be sure to add new ideas to the article.

Thank you Zak Claxton of Frothy Music for your input.

It’s often been said that twitter is like a bar full of people. You can listen or jump in with any conversation at the bar. Keep this in mind when you tweet.

If you just blurt out “Click here to see my new video!” Then you closely resemble the people handing out crappy pamphlets at the train station, that end up in the bin seconds later.

Anyone attempting to promote a product, be it a song, CD, or even a book, needs to be aware the usual rules do not apply on Twitter. It has evolved with its own set of rules and etiquette. To successfully promote your product you need to be aware of a few things.

The Artist's Guide to Marketing Yourself and Networking in Second Life

By Jeffrey Lipsky from ArtCalendar (The business magazine for visual artists)

In this article, we’re going to explore some ways you’ll be able to hit the ground running with marketing yourself in SL’s virtual art scene. There are many similarities to real life when it comes to presenting yourself to the inworld audiences of curators, collectors and other artists. For instance, there’s no better way to get your art in front of the right people than through word-of-mouth and networking. Incorporating both virtual and real world sensibilities into your marketing plan can be a powerful combination.

Digital Marketing Speaker Series in Second Life

Digital Marketing Series in Second Life
via Joanna Scott's blog

This Wednesday, 22nd April, sees the first in a new series of live speaker events in Second Life. Organized in association with our colleagues at Palgrave Macmillan, Macmillan’s academic arm, we will feature a range of speakers all themed around the broad topic of Digital Marketing.

First up, Alycia de Mesa, the author of the new book Brand Avatar, will be speaking about virtual marketing and branding. Alycia will discuss what real life brand strategies to keep in mind when branding in-world as well as the burgeoning field of virtual branding.

We will be giving out a free sample chapter of the book to everyone who attends the event, and the book will be available to buy at a special 20% discount.

This is a departure from our previously purely scientific activities, specifically to introduce other parts of the Macmillan group to how great SL is, but I hope it will be very relevant to people in all genres, from multinationals to individuals.

All very welcome to attend: any questions, or if you would like to come but need some help getting started with Second Life, by all means email me at j.scott@nature.com or find me in SL as Joanna Wombat.

Title: Brand Avatar
Speaker: Alycia de Mesa
Date: Wednesday 22nd April
Time: 6pm BST / 10am PST/SLT
Venue: Khufu Conference Centre

Doubledown Note: If you would like to see "Avatar Branding" in all of it's shining glory, check out Torley... and all that is Torley Lives. He's a walking, talking image of a branded avatar success story, and also he's a person, a Linden, and a very cool dude doing some amazing things in the world.

Is there a current Music Crowd Recession in Second Life?

Second Life is hopping! Anyone that is inworld knows this. Major news outlets are talking about the vibrancy within Second Life. When each of us logs on, we see there's an average of 60,000-80,000 people logged in at once.

While participating in a SL forum I frequent, the conversation came up about performers and venues not being able to pull a large crowd as well as what is expected (especially with MORE people logging into SL these days). Over the past month, many performers noticed and are noticing a dramatic drop-off in the crowd numbers. Musicians and DJs that were easily pulling in 30, 40, 50+ people to their shows, are seeing 5, 8, 10 people show up now.

The question is, why? Many of us are baffled. Could it be that people are just 'evented out'? Is the SL music crowd tired out with the SL music scene? Have they been to enough music shows in SL and are now doing other projects that keep them busy? Is it that Second Life just hasn't been working like it should, and when people can actually get in to SL, they have to complete the work they couldn't when SL was borked, preventing free time? Maybe it's that crowd members may have the notion that they must tip the performer and venue if they want to attend a show?

As we are all trying to put our finger on it, here are my thoughts.
(I decided to copy and paste my thoughts directly from the thread)

---
Doubledown Tandino post #1:
Since about mid-March, there has really been a dry spell [regarding the event attendance numbers]. And frankly , it's kind of annoying.

Since the same amount of people are generally logged in at the same time (between 40,000 and 80,000) that means they are inworld, and doing something else, and not attending music events.

The shows I did recently (the past two-three weeks) have been widely-varied events; including the Music Awareness 2009, an art/music show at Twilight's Peace, a few club DJ shows, a networking/marketing show with metaLIFE, a show (The Rendezvous at Muse Isle) where not only do I perform for 2 hours live, we also give away a $3800L animation equipment at every event. ... still nothing has been more of a crowd draw than the next.

The question I have been asking myself in the past weeks is:
Why has there been a dropoff in live music attendance??
And the answer I keep coming back to is: over inundated, unoriginal, same stuff day after day after day is not going to draw MORE of a fanbase.

I look at this situation from both sides. As a music lover in SL, I've been checking out SL music shows for 3 years. I am now down to hanging out at about 1 show a day, and maybe 2-4 popins.... I simply have no time or desire to see more shows, even if it's a performer I like (cause i've seen em plenty already). I am assuming many others, the ones that would normally be in the crowd, feel the same way.

As a performer I'm on stage thinking "where is everybody"
... and I reply to myself "they're not here, that much is true"

So what does all this mean?!?!?! nothing really. I guess SL is going through a phase where many people are burnt out on events? Hopefully it'll correct itsself.

In the meantime, I've always had the idea of an unofficial supporters union. A group of us that are willing to extend the support. The best way to get more people at a show is to have the people at the show spread the word and offer teleports over. My ONLY crowded shows these days are when my staff and crowd goes the extra mile for me.

I'm of the opinion that if we have a crew of devotees that want to pop-in for eachother, and help eachother get the word out, it'll make a major impact getting more people to shows, and faster.

Doubledown Tandino post #2:
There is a big illusion going on here.... The best performers in SL are not getting the biggest crowds anymore. It's the musicians that have a strong support team that get the crowd to turn up. The musicians that can focus on their music and show, while they have staff to cover promotions, tps, word spreading, more promotion.... those are the performers that seem to have the biggest crowds. When the promotion team + the venue + the performer + the crowd all work together, that's when a packed sim happens.

Doubledown Tandino post #3:
(in a response to another performer that has found group notices and IMs to be ineffective.)
Sending out group notices and IMs may not have a direct effect ....but the spam has a long lasting residual effect.

Having your name sent out to people is a good thing and if you spam (within the confines of the loose SL spam etiquette), it can never be something that hurts; only something that helps in the long run.

The question remains though: For the amount of time spent promoting in SL, is the result worth the effort? Currently, it seems like it's not worth the effort, but being a marketing & promotion professional, I still refer to old cliches about advertising. (A perfect example is Coca-cola. I've had a coke less than 10 times in my life. I think it is vile and disgusting. Yet, as a human, living on Earth, I know Coke. I know the name, the brand, the logo, and what it does.)

Putting that into the SL equation, I think even if people don't make it to the current show, advertising yourself anyway puts your name in their minds for the future. There's quite a few people in my daily SL travels that know of me, and know I'm a DJ, but haven't seen a show. Because of my previous ad placement in their mind, we can jump into a conversation which could lead to gaining a devoted fan.... but i digress.

Something is currently "off" about second life music events (and perhaps events and get-togethers in general). The people are simply not coming out to the events.

So...in the meantime, while we all try to figure this out... What do we do?

I think the best method is the Doubledown: "pay it forward pop in" approach.
We all know eachother, we all support eachother.... why not stick your avatar at someone else's show when you're not doing anything? Or just a pop in... it takes a minute to pop in and say hi, maybe listen to one tune. I think if we do this for eachother, we'll have the feeling of abundance of support.

FOOTNOTE: I really hope that last years push about how important it is to tip the performer and the venue hasn't caused a sense that people should tip when they go to a show. I know as a performer, I remember who tips, but I don't remember who doesn't. The musician and the venue don't care if some people can't tip.. Lets hope the SL community understands that we were never demanding tips and donations to show up to a music event.

There are my thoughts. I wanted to point out that I, and many others in SL are feeling this 'evented-out' (thanks Maryjoanne for the term). Is there something to be done that can "fix" anything? Getting a sense of what's happening is the first step. Group discussion will lead to a turnaround in this current performance event slump in Second Life.

Are you currently feeling 'evented-out'? Do you sense that events aren't pulling crowds like they used to? If you're a performer, have you noticed any of this yourself?
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about how to turn around the current SL event slump?

Get your music on the top of the IndieSpectrum playlist

From Fox Reinsch of IndieSpectrum Radio

---
IndieSpectrum Radio is the top SL radio station according to the Shoutcast listings for last month. Over 21,000 tune ins and in the top half of all the radio stations on those web listings. The web page, with your links, had over 99,000 hits last month!

We would like to help those artists that help us to support and promote live music in SL. Do any of the following and get bumped to the top of our playlist.

**Give out our free radios at your shows (boxed with 9 radios, iPods, antique, audio rack and surround receiver; with now playing signs or not).
https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1227654

**Get your favorite live music venue or any SL sim or business to play our stream and you will get bumped and that business will get free 30 second spots on the station, if you arrange it with announcements of your gigs.

**Send us music! Any new song gets all your songs bumped to the top.
http://www.indiespectrum.com/music_upload.html

**Do bumpers, voice recordings, intros or outros to your songs. You can do a generic one or one for each song. Just say "This is (your name) and your are about to hear my song (song name) on IndieSpectrum Radio" or do a just heard, whatever you like around 10 seconds.

**Have ISR simulcast your live shows. We need your stream URL and dates and times. Don't have this automated yet so someone has to be around. All tips that come in from the ISR radios that come in during a simulcasted show will go to you, unless you would like to split them.

BTW ISR is all SL artists now, I have taken off all the music and links to artists that did not have SL names. If you're missing from the playlist let me know what your SL name is!! http://www.indiespectrum.com/playlistA.html

Thanks for all the great music!

Promotions, Promotional Events, Music, Audio, and The Music Biz in Second Life - Three Articles

Three interesting articles popped out today and were brought to my attention by Mal Burns
I find these posts very important. Bookmark the articles; they may come in handy for you some day.

Everything written in each article is worth the read, however, if I were to add my personal note for the reader, I would say that generally, articles about "how to run a successful event" or "how to run a successful promotion" explain the basics of how to technically and logistically create a basic event. For me, what is most effective about an event I create is the creativity, the guts, and the people involved. Finding ways to NOT fit the mold is what I feel works best in Second Life.

Overview of Music and Audio in Second Life
"Second Life is a great place for people who enjoy listening to or creating music. People who like to listen to music will find a wide range of styles and unique venues to explore. Musicians can share their work with a global audience by performing live concerts in Second Life. It's also a unique opportunity for artists to directly connect with fans around the world, taking requests and communicating with them in a live environment. Just like playing a gig in Real Life, but without the hassle of carrying your gear around and traveling!

The art and science of promotional events
Written by Rika Watanabe on Through the Broken Looking Glass

"...Repeat after me: Promotional events exist to promote sales and increase exposure. They don’t exist to promote hate and increase lag, which is what you’re doing! How exactly promotional events and most importantly, promotional giveaways promote sales?..."

Promotions and the music business in Second Life
Written by Thinkerer Melville of http://rezzable.com/blog

"Music is a business? It is to people who want to make a living at it. An important part of that business is promotion. I have been developing some ideas about how musicians can promote their acts in Second Life. When I get the ideas well developed, I will put them into the Hobo Starter Kit, but I think I have enough useful material to share some of it here.
Musical acts in SL might want to promote to these four target markets:
  • Venues and event managers (get a gig)
  • Inworld audience (fill the house)
  • Out-there audience (Sell your music for now. Future: sell your performances.)
  • Advertisers/ Sponsors (Get paid for ad placements and commercials)..."

Meanwhile, on the right side are the DJ Biospaces or "talent" wall. Add your DJs to this wall to get them extra bookings.

Doubledown Note: As a bonus, this is where I send any and all inquiries. I generally get 4 to 8 daily requests asking for good djs, good clubs or employment. The DJs & Clubs Hub is where I bring anyone asking me. I show them the DJs and Clubs walls, and make several recommendations.

Ravelong™ does ongoing promotions and classified ads creating even more traffic & exposure for you.
