New World Notes Advertises IMVU Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar* on Article About Second Life Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar*

I'm so confused.... this is a screen capture of New World Notes, showing a screen capture of a Second Life webpage. On that Second Life page is an ad for an IMVU ad featuring a blue Avatar (to coincide with the movie "Avatar"). Ironically, on the New World Notes page happened to be another IMVU ad featuring the same blue Avatar.

I've got the Avatar blues. All these blue ads makes me finally want to click on that big-breasted Evony ad (which is probably showing up to the right hand side of my blog)

Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker - Monday December 28th - 5pm SLT

Monday 12/28 at 5pm - Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker
Via Chestnut's Choices on New World Notes

Ballet Pixelle performs its version of the Nutcracker for those of you who have not yet seen this seasonal classic. You will be entertained by mysterious dancers on magic carpets, a Russian cossack stamping out a dance, a Chinese Empresses moving about the stage on delicate feet and Spanish senoritas throwing themselves flamboyantly.  In IBM 10.  [SLurl teleport at this link]

----
About:
Ballet Pixelle

Ballet Pixelle produces professional works that creatively enhance the viewer’s experience while attending a ballet performance. Audience members can see classical, neoclassical, contemporary, and novel ballets that cannot be seen elsewhere.  New ballets are premiered with original stories, choreography, and music with dancers from around the world all dancing together in one space.
Ballet Pixelle LogoUnlike other ballet companies, Ballet Pixelle uses new technology to take the art form into a unique environment to new and existing spectators - the first and only of its kind.  The company performs in and takes advantage of a 3D Internet virtual world called Second Life®. The company creatively utilizes unique aspects of the virtual reality, e.g., transforming from human into animal or growing old on stage.  The ballet uses a new breed of dancers and a new classical ballet vocabulary created to take advantage of the innovative medium.  The dancers are virtual representations of human beings (avatars). These avatars, or virtual dancers, are real people from around the globe – Bahrain, Chicago, Denmark, England, Germany, Hawaii, Holland, New York, Seattle, Scotland, and Washington DC – that come together to captivate audiences.  Many are real life professionals.

By performing in an Internet virtual space, it breaks geo-Olmannen
graphical boundaries and time zones, and it allows new spectators to enjoy, in a unique way, a ballet performance that they may have not experienced otherwise. Ballet Pixelle drives further awareness and appreciation for the art form.

“By the end of the first act, I realized that the same emotional response that real life dance can evoke is possible in the virtual realm.”—Pixeleen Mistral of the "Second Life Herald".

Ballet Pixelle’s debut on February 7, 2007, was the world premiere of a new and unique ballet, Olmannen, an original 3-act story written, choreographed, directed and staged in the virtual world of Second Life® at the Ballet Pixelle's Theatre hosted by IBM (IBM 10 (12,191,21).

How To Make Second Life Truly Mass Market, Part 1: Deep Integration With Facebook

How To Make Second Life Truly Mass Market, Part 1: Deep Integration With Facebook
by Hamlet Au of New World Notes

Flat growth of Second LifeThe latest official economic stats for Second Life are now available, and they tell a mixed picture: while user-to-user transactions continue to grow, the absolute number of unique users does not. After a steady growth period at the start of the year, monthly unique repeat SL users have plateaued to around 750K. In his report, Linden Chief Product Officer T. Linden suggests this flat growth is the result of the new policy (imposed last May) banning Traffic-gaming bots.

That may well be the case, but what's undeniable is that Secnd Life is still struggling to become a virtual world with mass market status. By way of comparison, consider today's largest virtual world: YoVille, from Zynga, a web-based MMO played in Facebook and MySpace. Only launched in May 2008, it now counts nearly 20 Million unique monthly active users on Facebook alone. (Making it much larger than not just World of Warcraft, but web-based MMOs like Habbo.)

There are a number of reasons for YoVille's rapid and sustained growth, but one in particular stands out: Deep integration with leading social networks, especially Facebook with its 300 million active users. This explains how YoVille managed to grow so speedily, for its appeal is not just the virtual world itself (cartoonish and simple as it is), but the desire to play it with Facebook friends. "At their most fundamental level," Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga, recently told me, social network-based games like YoVille "are games that you can play with real people with real identities."

I recently wrote about how mass adoption is so crucial to Second Life, and at the time, I promised to offer suggestions for making that possible. Taking YoVille's success as a reference point, my first recommendation is this: Second Life needs deep integration with Facebook.

YoVille avatars with real life Facebook accounts I don't mean a mere SL-related Facebook Application (those exist already), but integration across all channels, starting with the very first SL signup page, which should accept Facebook account credentials.

Doing this would associate new Residents with their Facebook page, which generally contain many of their real life details. In that way, the subsequent SL avatar would have a subordinate status, after the owners' real name and autobiographical details. (As with my YoVille avatar friends, at left, who are automatically linked to their Facebook profiles.)

Philip Linden often says that someday, Internet users will feel obligated to use an online avatar that's somehow distinct from the actual owner. However, with the largest virtual world (and other leading social games) the exact opposite is the case: the most popular avatar types are explicit extensions of an already existing real world identity.

Or to put it another way: to gain mass growth, Second Life may have to abandon the expectation that new users adopt a whole separate personality. As YoVille and other top social games (which now count 100 million+ users) suggest, most people prefer avatars that are firmly linked to their first lives.

A Bridge between Worlds: Metaplace and Second Life

I have been following along with the news about Metaplace, a new virtual world currently in between beta and alpha phases. For me, my time is too invested in Second Life to delve into another virtual world, but if I were to try another, I would check out Metaplace. It's not quite my style, and not what I am personally looking for in a virtual world, however, I can tell that many people are going to love it's style and "gameplay" (for lack of a better word). It has a combination of Populus, Plurk's karma, and even a little bit of IMVU and Yoville. It really does feel like a fun world. What is intriguing is that Metaplace also has the potential to have an inworld economy and other elements that only Second Life (and open grids) currently offers.

------

Post and Picture below by DIP's Dispatches from the Imagination Age blog.

A Bridge between Worlds: Metaplace and Second Life

In a fascinating discovery tonight, I learned that Second Life builder Miki Gymnast who is known in Metaplace simply as "Miki," has built a dialog tool for her world in Metaplace that allows a person to send instant messages from Miki's Metaplace world to a user in Second Life. In the image above, Eureka Dejavu (DIP's Rita J. King) sends me an IM.

Connectivity between virtual worlds is an ongoing issue. And a critically important one as people find their lives, both virtual and physical, to be increasingly distributed.

Upcoming Changes for Adult Content - From the Linden Lab-Second Life Community Blog

UPCOMING CHANGES FOR ADULT CONTENT

From its beginning, Second Life has been an open place where Residents can explore a wide variety of creative pursuits. This has resulted in a vast amount of amazing content inworld, and has helped make Second Life the exceptional place it is. It is very important to Linden Lab that we support and preserve this creativity and openness as our community continues to grow, and as the range of uses for Second Life widens.

At the same time, we must ensure that all Residents can enjoy the virtual world. In particular, it has become clear that some Residents are interested in pursuing certain “Adult” activities in Second Life that others would rather not casually encounter. To address this, over the next few months, we will need to implement some changes around Adult content to ultimately give all Residents more control over their Second Life experiences. We believe we can implement a better system than we have now for managing this content -- one that is respectful of everyone’s personal preferences, yet does not detract from the creativity and passion that define Second Life.

The system we build will have three main features, which we will describe in great detail over the next few months. First, it will provide a way to geographically separate Adult content and activities to a part of the “mainland” designed to accommodate these activities (Estate owners with Adult content on their land will be required to flag their content; they will not be required to move). Second, it will filter search results, so that those who do not wish to see “Adult” results will not. Third, it will require that those who access or see “Adult” content (whether on land or in search) have had their accounts verified – such as by a payment or age verification method.

The New York Times | Filthy Fluno: Portrait of an Artist as an Avatar

Portrait of an Artist as an Avatar
How a struggling Boston painter finally found success through his alter ego -- a hip, virtual-world art-scene maker.

CERTAINLY, FILTHY FLUNO is not the first artist to realize that in order to sell his paintings, he needs to sell himself. He does, however, work at it with impressive zeal. Every day he makes new friends and cultivates new contacts, edging himself and his work — a collection of expressionistic oil paintings and vibrant, graffiti-laced pastels — just a little bit farther into a universe that to others might appear huge and indifferent, but as Filthy sees it is stuffed with possibility and also potential customers. To this end, you will often find him wandering around art openings and dance parties, dressed in a spiffy suit and pair of sneakers, trying earnestly to chat up every person in the room.

Bush Dies Peacefully In His Sleep

WASHINGTON—George W. Bush, 43rd president of the United States of America, passed away painlessly in his sleep Monday night, White House sources confirmed. The 62-year-old Bush was reportedly discovered lying unresponsive in his bed by first lady Laura Bush, a gentle smile still on his lips. "It was as though he knew it was his time to go," said longtime family physician Dr. Harold Ditmas, who pronounced the president dead of natural causes at 7:24 a.m. Plans for Bush's funeral have been postponed indefinitely following an unexpected incident in which the president's corpse was sucked through an Air Force One jet engine.

Crap Mariner Wants SL Musician's Music...so Sell it to Him!

Message sent from Crap Mariner:

Crazy Idea Time

Howdy... Crap Mariner here.
I'm sending you this info because you are involved in music in SL in some way or fashion.
Since I'm so difficult to shop for, I got a lot of iTunes gift cards for the holidays last year.
I'm sure a lot of you ended up with gift cards and such like that.
Well, I spent all the credits on SL-related musicians.

I also collected up URLs to iTunes download pages for SL musicians in case anybody else wanted to do the same as I did.

This year, I'd like to do it again, posting a catalog of links on my weblog as well as posting the album covers and links in my Clocktower on Edloe Island. Or, if someone's got a higher-profile venue out there with plenty of prims to spare, I'd be glad to help collect up and maintain the textures and links through the holiday season.

Anyway, if you're a performer with your music on iTunes, I'd love to know where to find it on iTunes and if you've got the album cover already uploaded into SL.

if you're a venue owner and are willing to post a landmark-giver or poster, let me know and I'll get one to you when the project gets rolling.

If you think the Clocktower just ain't good enough for hosting such a project and you've got an even better place, well, I'm never one to let pride get in the way of a project's success (just look at my name, eh) - let me know and I'll be glad to build this up for your location.

Anyway, thanks for keeping the grid humming with music, and hopefully we can help boost y'all's sales with the holiday season.

Thanks,
Crap Mariner

"Koinup's Burning Life Directory
In my weekend Open Forum on favorite sites in Burning Life, Silvy Noel points out a pictorial directory and photo archive of BL places on Koinup, an NWN partner. (Like this place at left, a chill DJ club in the heart of the desert.) If you have a Koinup account and want to share Burning Life sites you vist, just shoot SL screenshots as postcards, then upload them to Koinup's server; the X,Y,Z address automatically filters them into the social network's BL content stream. Details on how to do that here."

Blues Traveler: The Story of Von Johin, The Avatar Who Landed A Real World Record Deal

Blues Traveler:
The Story of Von Johin, The Avatar Who Landed A Real World Record Deal
by Wagner James Oh/Hamlet Oh on Thurs August 14th, 2008

"On the Eastern shore of Second Life's French Quarter (SLURL) is a club where Tennessee bluesman Von Johin holds sway. He performs there, and the place is now his; he bought it, he tells me, when the region's original owner had to leave SL.

"I did not want to move," he explains, grinning. He pays for the club with the live music he performs in-world. "I do very well, I have very generous fans." Many tip well; many more tip often. Between two groups centered around his performances, French Quarter and Johin's Blue Note Group, Johin estimates several hundred fans, who love, as this video attests, his raspy, old school blues laced with witty twists. (He does a great bluesy cover of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog", for example, which was itself a riff on blues master Howlin' Wolf. Returning Zeppelin, in other words, to its roots.)

Among those many fans, as it turned out, were talent scouts with Reality Entertainment, a real world multimedia company with a boutique record label that counts albums from popular alt rock group Marcy Playground (they of "Sex and Candy") and 80s metal gods Krokus in its library. The scouts were in Second Life looking for top talent among SL's large live music scene, Wired reported yesterday, and settled on Johin for his heartfelt performances. The company claims it's the first recording contract offered to an avatar, and that's probably true. (The acclaimed avatar-only duo of Chouchou were recently offered a small label deal; however, singer juliet Heberle told me, the label discovered their music on the web, not in SL.)"
