eJamming AUDiiO 3.0 Makes History in Second Life

eJamming AUDiiO 3.0 Makes History in Second Life

Musicians Perform Live Together From Three Distant Locations Using eJamming’s CD-Quality Real-Time Platform

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On Saturday, October 30, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time, a drummer in North Carolina will play live with a guitarist in Maine and a bass player in California to a club full of Second Life “residents” dazzled by the rich sound and tight groove that eJamming AUDiiO 3.0 enables.

“We’re excited that bands in Second Life have discovered our latest software and that one of the top in-world promoters reached out to us to promote this event,” said Gail Kantor, eJamming Co-Founder. “Achieving a low-bandwidth high resolution multi-player audio service is what we’ve strived for all along. With 3.0 we’ve nailed it. That bands are using eJamming in SL is unbelievably gratifying.”

“Kevin M. Thomas, one of my musicians, turned me on to this new version of eJamming,” Tara Lopes of MUSIC NOT POLITICS offered. “Now, several of my musicians have started using it, and I feel privileged introducing eJamming AUDiiO to the entire SL community.”

Netcasting in SL is a natural progression toward eJamming AUDiiO’s JamCast feature, which allows real-world listeners on any Internet-connected device to attend live eJamming sessions. Today, artists typically stay close to their fans using social networks. JamCasting through eJamming’s multiplex AUDiiO platform extends the growing trend of online music distribution – focused on live, geographically dispersed sessions, further empowering musicians.

eJamming AUDiiO 3.0 is downloadable from www.ejamming.com/learn-more/.

The live performance can be heard at http://fcmcradio.com.

There is no cost to participate in the RMG Idol Competition.

As RMG Idol is a competition based on Talent, performers from all walks of the SL Music Scene are encouraged to enter this competition. Each Performer will have the opportunity to perform 1 song for the Judging Panel, and receive constructive criticizm from each judge. IT IS ENCOURAGED THAT THE ARTIST PERFORM THEIR BEST ORIGINAL OR COVER SONG FOR THE OPEN CALL.

The Judging Panel, at its sole disgression, shall select the Contestants that will move on to participate in the RMG Idol Competition.

RMG Idol Competition: Rules updated: 05/10/10

From the starting pool, Contestants will compete against each other to determine who continues on with the contest. Weekly eliminations will be based equally on Popular Vote and Judging. Popular Vote will be conducted through Voting Boards at the host venue, as well as at participating Venues and Sims across Second Life. Top Vote getters that also receive the majority of votes by the Judging Panel, will move on to the following weeks show.

As contestants are eliminated each week, remaining contenders will be given the opportunity for more time in front of the judges and audience. CONTESTANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PERFORM THEIR BEST ORIGINAL OR COVER SONGS! Due to Performance Rights Obligations, Artists with Original Music will be favored by the Judging Panel. As Audience Voting is an equal part of the competition, all artists are encouraged to "bring out their crowd" to the performance venue or satellite stages, where Voting Boards shall be placed. Anyone can vote as often as they like for each artist on the RMG Idol Vote Board, at a cost of 50 L$ per vote. Proceeds from Voting Boards will be split, with each contestant receiving 25L$ for each vote cast on their behalf.

To allow fairness to all contestants, voting will commence immediately following each show, and will be open until 11:59 pm SLT the following Sunday. Votes will be tabulated for each artist with the Elimination held at the beginning of the subsequent week's show on Monday. The final 2 contestants will be selected based on Popular Vote from the 2 week voting period prior to the Finale.

The competition shall run from Monday, July 12 through August 16, until the Top 2 Contestants are selected. The "Finale Show" will be held on August 30, 2010. The Judges Panel will choose the Final Winner based on the following criteria:

Vocal Talent
Musical Ability
Personality
Originality

This same criteria will also be used by Judges throughout the competition. Voting will make up 50% of the competition, with the final 2 contestants chosen by Popular Votes. Then, the final 2 contestants will each perform a 15 minute set for the Judges, who will deliberate to determine the winner, based on this criteria.

Judges will include non-Second Life executives from Relax Music Group and Halogen Records. Guest Judges from the RL Music Industry will also participate. Bones Writer from Trax Live Music Resource Center shall serve as the SL Judge. The competition will be hosted by Trick Rembrandt (Patrick Rule, RMG Co-CEO) and broadcast on IRMGRadio.com.

All Runners-Up will be invited back for a Final Performance, with the Winner closing the show with a final song. The first place and runner up winners shall receive prizes as listed above.

All Contestants will receive airplay and exposure though IRMGRadio.com, RMGIdolSL.com, and participating partners web sites. A national publicity campaign conducted by Halogen Records will also occur throughout the competition to expose all the participating artists to the RL Music Media. As this is a promotional opportunity based in RL, it will bring the Live Music Community in Second Life a great deal of exposure with the real world entertainment industry. Relax Music Group is committed to exposing the Thriving SL Music Scene throughout the Music Industry, giving deserving SL performers opportunities to advance their careers in RL, as well as RL performers their introduction to the SL Music Scene.

Show Format:

RMG Idol will be held at various venues throughout Second Life and broadcast on IRMGRadio.com online and across the grid. The show format will be hosted by an SL Personality, with each Contestant given an equal amount of time to perform. Multiple Venues, Sims, and Shops will be encouraged to Sponsor RMG Idol, host Voting boards, receiving mentions in the IRMGRadio.com stream in exchange for carrying the competition. Again, Voting will commence following each weeks show, allowing people ample time to vote for their favorite performer. Eliminations will be announced at the beginning of each week's show, commencing on July 23.

The Show Host and Judges will be linked to the broadcast via Skype, with each judge weighing in on the merits of each artist. Judges will comprise members of Relax Music Group, Halogen Records, and Distinguished Members of the RL and SL Music Community. While Voting will predominate the majority of a contestant's score, the Winning Contestant will require a combination of winning votes and Judge's Consensus.

The RMG Idol Winner, will be offered a recording contract with Halogen Records and featured on an upcoming Compilation CD release. The Winner and 5 Runner's Up will receive an 8 week Radio Promotion Campaign through RMGDigital.NET, receiving airplay across their network of Registered Programmers at College and Public Broadcast Stations and Internet Streams. Timed for promotion throughout the Fall College Radio Season, the Winner and Runner's Up will receive Prime Airplay Exposure, generating even more interest for the Live Music Scene in Second Life.

Please note: Finalist and Runners Up must provide Original Recordings, or procure Performance Rights to any Cover Material that is Released, Distributed and Promoted following the RMG Idol Competition.

How to Stream Your Music Into Second Life - Six Software Source Clients Compared by Joe Bear

How to Stream Your Music Into Second Life
Six Software Source Clients Compared
By Joe Bear

Were you aware that your music can be streamed into Second Life using the same technology as internet radio? Bringing your music to this new audience requires a Shoutcast source client, which sends your music to a streaming server, which subsequently rebroadcasts your music to all the listeners in Second Life.

This article lists the leading choices in Shoutcast/Icecast source clients. This source client is the piece of software that runs on your computer, connecting the music you play with the streaming server.

What it does
The Shoutcast/Icecast streaming source client takes audio input from a program or hardware device, encodes it into a media stream, and sends the media stream on to a streaming server. Each step of this process requires configuration, and each program differs in the specifics of where you may find these settings. However, the settings themselves are fairly universal.

Music source
The input to the source client may come from a media player such as iTunes, Winamp, or Windows Media Player, or it may also come from a hardware device connected to your computer -- such as a mixer connected to a sound card or even an integrated laptop microphone. Your chosen source client will present a list of possible inputs from which you can choose to broadcast.

Encoding
Some source clients may be able to encode into multiple media formats. However, for compatibility with Second Life, you will need to use mp3. The Second Life viewer on your listeners' end does not support WMA, AAC, Ogg, or other formats. Further, you will find that if you try to use the most pristine mp3 encoding settings, your listeners will experience skips in the stream. It is best not to use anything higher than 44.1 kHz, 64 kbps, stereo. You should be able to find these settings grouped together.

Specifying the stream server
Lastly, you will need to specify the Shoutcast/Icecast streaming server to which the source client will connect. This will be in the form of a URL or an IP Address, a Port number, and a Password. Some streaming clients allow you to build a 'library' of servers, each with their own URL, port, and password. This is handy if you regularly perform at a number of venues. Each venue will have its own server. This allows you to, once configured, merely select a given venue's server from a list, and have all the values set at once. If your source client does not have this feature, you will need to manually enter this data every time for each venue.

Criteria
For each listed software streaming client, I list the price, where you can obtain it, what platform it runs upon, and other attributes. After reading this article, you should be ready to choose a streaming source client that meets your needs.
Before I list the choices, I will first define what the various attributes mean.

Operating System (OS) - This tells you what operating system the streaming source client is compatible with. There are choices for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and other UNIX-like OSs.

Plugin vs. Standalone - Some Shoutcast/Icecast source clients are 'plugins', which operate inside of other programs. An example is the Shoutcast DSP Plugin, which installs 'into' Winamp as a host. Other source clients run in their own window, providing all needed functionality themselves.

Record functionality - Some source clients will also record (or 'archive') your stream. The stream is not only sent on to the streaming server, but it also is written to your computer's disk as an mp3 file. This allows you to play back your stream at a later date.

Presenting the candidates:

butt (broadcast using this tool)
  • Free
  • Linux, MacOS and Windows.
  • Open source project hosted on Sourceforge
  • Standalone
  • Streaming and recording simultaneously with different bitrates
This relative newcomer provides all the functionality that you would need or want. The fact that it is free, and runs on almost any computer, makes it a great choice.

Winamp with Shoutcast DSP Plugin
  • Free
  • Windows, Mac OS, Linux, other UNIX
  • Winamp makes Winamp Standard
  • Shoutcast makes the Shoutcast DSP Plugin
  • Host media player and Plugin
  • No built in recording functionality
This solution has been the mainstay in the Windows arena, mostly due to its price.

Nicecast
  • $40 (free demo)
  • Mac OS
  • Rogueamoeba is the company behind Nicecast
  • Standalone
  • Archive function
For years, this has been the standard in the Mac arena. Full featured.

Simplecast
  • $139
  • Windows
  • Spacialaudio produces simplecast
  • Standalone
  • No built in recording functionality
This selection comes from a company with a full line of professional internet radio tools.

Reaper with Shoutcast plugin
  • $60 (free demo)
  • Windows
  • Cockos makes Reaper
  • Landoleet is where you can get the reaper_shoutcast.dll plugin (this is NOT the same as the Shoutcast DSP Plugin for Winamp)
  • Host DAW and Plugin
  • Full multitrack recording capability
Reaper is a full-functioned DAW, from a company founded by the guy who first invented Shoutcast technology. Extremely powerful, with complexity to match.

EdCast
  • Free
  • Windows
  • Oddsock makes edcast
  • Available either standalone, or as a plugin for Winamp or Foobar2000.
  • Recorder not built in.
Both EdCast and its precursor Oddcast are from the same developer, along with a number of other useful music tools (including a stream recorder).

The envelope, please
If you are just getting started in streaming your music into Second Life, I recommend that you start with butt. Silly name, I know. However, it is free, does everything you want it to do, and runs the same way on any computer you're likely to have. Plus, it is an open source program, meaning that its future is pretty much assured.

Any of the other choices would be fine as well. They all work pretty much hiccup-free. If your needs are unique, there may be some reason to prefer another over butt.

Myself, I use Reaper with the Shoutcast plugin. Reaper is a full-featured music production DAW like Pro Tools, Logic, Sonar, etc. In fact, it was my DAW before I started streaming into Second Life. The fact that Reaper is from the guy the guy that invented internet radio (as well as Winamp, Gnutella, and other modern necessities) holds strong sway with me.

Get going!
You really can't go wrong with any of the above. Just grab one, grab the free Second Life viewer, create a free Second Life account, log on, and start performing for the eager Second Life audiences!

Audio Broadcast Streams - Musicians, Singers, & DJs: Perform Live Online to an Audience Around the World and in to Second Life & Virtual Worlds (updated Jan2010)

Ravelong Broadcast Stream Rentals
for Virtual Worlds and the internet. (Shoutcast)

To inquire, get more info, or to purchase a stream:
Email DJDoubledown@gmail.com or visit Ravelong Productions in Second Life
(inSL, contact Doubledown Tandino)

===

The concept:
It is possible to perform live music, sing, and DJ from your real life home.  Many people from around the world can tune in and listen.  Anyone can tune in to a live broadcast stream provided they have a broadband connection, meaning, listeners can tune in from the internet, from their mobile device such as a phone and avatars in-world can tune in too.

How DJing over the internet and into a virtual world works:
The DJ or musician plays/performs (in any computer software music player, external live instrument or DJ equipment). A program (Shoutcast, Simplecast, SAM, etc) on your computer then sends out any sound going through your computer's sound card. Your broadcast reaches a server relay and this is what is needed to stream music live at HIGH QUALITY.  The stream comes with a listener link. Any listener may hear the music you play LIVE. (For Second Life or a virtual world, that link goes into the land's music/audio link in order for inworld avatars to hear your broadcast.

Why rent one of your audio streams and not use some free streaming site?
Free streaming sites are low-quality sound.  You could be performing the greatest set of your life, and it sounds great to you in your home studio, however the listeners hear poor, lower than radio quality sound.  Dropouts, cut-offs, unstable, inconsistent low-quality sound is what you ALWAYS get with free streaming (for example: Ustream, Livestream, Tinychat, etc).  Free streaming sites and video conferencing sites were meant for voice discussion, and low-quality audio (at audio qualities of 32kbps or 64kbps which is worse than radio).  To perform an excellent pristine audio quality live show, you will want to make sure your audience hears what you hear, at CD-quality sound or above.

Free streaming sites do not come with customer service, technical support, troubleshooting, and emergency backup.  I do.   Now, with our 2010 improved servers and ISP, we are running at 100% uptime. Some clients that have relied on my streaming service have included IBM, Playboy, and many individual performers.  ALL have been with me (some for several years) because of my customer support AND quality of service.

OK, so, how much is this going to cost?
Less than you think it would.  Other companies try to rip you off.  If you were to do a search on the internet now, lets say on shoutcast.com for example, they are looking to charge at $50-$100 or more USD monthly!  That's insane!!  I charge what it really costs.  Depending on your package, it will cost $12-$15usd monthly (approximately $3800L/month).

Lets discuss your plans and expectations, and I'll be able to determine what is right for you as a live music performer.

Traci Nubalo - The Word - A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.

A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.

About Traci:
Hello Second Life music and arts lovers!

I'm Traci Nubalo and I'm a refugee from the RL music business, formerly an artist manager, tour manager, concert promoter and music journalist.

This blog is my effort to report on what makes our Second Life music/art scene interesting. It's about the people that make the scene happen and how they work their magic to thrill us and inspire us with their writing, singing, playing and creating. Look at it as the backstage pass that most of us longed for and were never able to get our hands on.

---

Below is an interview Traci had with Harrie Skjellerup and POL Arida of "The Originals"

The Originals: "Gotta Wear Shades!"
by Traci Nubalo

"In mid-August of last year a grand experiment was mounted in the Second Life live music community. Scottish singer/songwriter POL Arida, relatively new to SL, noticed that the musicians making up the club scene were playing mostly “covers” (non-original copies of popular songs). POL is a talented and prolific songwriter, and he decided to try to make an attempt to encourage original musical content here on the grid.

The result was an ongoing project that he called The Originals. The opening event featured a stellar lineup of talent all performing, of course, only original compositions. During that epic “original Originals” concert, POL enlisted the future help of longtime SL music supporter Harrie Skjellerup.

I recently sat with POL and Harrie at her Pixel Hill music venue and we reminisced about the origins of this amazing and important concert series.

Zak Claxton Goes Mixed Reality for his Album Release Party

Zak Claxton's Album Release Party Goes Mixed Reality (Real Life and Second Life) Live.

Zak: "This was the first time I did a hybrid show that hit both a real life audience and an SL crowd at the same time. I found that I wanted to be able to pay more attention to my digital fans who hung around during the show, but the real people had to take precedence. NO matter, it was fun for everyone."

Zak Claxton: Live in Second Life

Could major radio stations soon be playing the music of artists best known for their Second Life avatars?
If one well-known Metaverse rocker has his way, the tunes that have players lining up in the virtual world will soon find their way into a real-world album release.

Zak Claxton is a big deal in Second Life. His live music performances and audience-pleasing style have over the years grown into a true fan following. So when Claxton had to decide whether to release his first real-world album using his real name or the Claxton nomme de Metaverse, the choice was easy.
Pixels and Policy spoke with Claxton to find out why virtual music is bringing him real recognition.

Synthetic Solo Artist

Claxton is one of a growing number of avatars turning the expansive Metaverse into a stage for their passions and talents. From heavily publicized art showings to lectures on economics, real-world entrepreneurs are unleashing their creativity and expertise on the virtual frontier.

Claxton's muse is the guitar, and he has courted the possibility of turning his Second Life performances into a real-world album from an early stage. In the real world, Claxton helped produce the successful albums of other performers while engaging in his Second Life hobby.

"The mesh of reality and SL came when I made the decision to record and release the album as Zak Claxton," Claxton told Pixels and Policy. "I've built a nice-sized global audience that would never have been possible as an independent singer-songwriter." Claxton is proud to say that more listeners know him as Zak Claxton than as his real-life persona.
Three years after his entry into Second Life, the virtual guitarist has a mastered CD and a scheduled a December 11, 2009 release date for his first record, "Zak Claxton."

Taking Virtual Music Global

In 2008, Wagner James Au of New World Notes reported on blues performer Von Johin, an avatar that landed a record deal through boutique firm Reality Entertainment.
At the time, Johin was one of the biggest musical draws in Second Life. His music continues to draw huge crowds at Muse Isle, and Johin's three-week "hiatus" led to a well-attended three hour "farewell set."

Claxton follows Johin by recording solely using a Second Life name: "Everything I'm doing musically now, in both real life and in virtual worlds and all over the web, is under the Zak Claxton name," Claxton told us. "It's less confusing for my audience, and the songs I'm currently performing have all been created while I've been performing as Zak.
The release of Claxton's eponymous debut album will almost certainly have a heavy Second Life presence, and if the growing popularity of digital musicians continues apace with the growth of virtual worlds, major record labels may soon see commercial potential in artists like Claxton.

As artists like Zak Claxton and Von Johin break through the distribution barrier of real world music by building an audience in the metaverse, the observer is left to wonder how long is left until established real-world performers bring their music and production teams to Second Life for virtual performances on a large scale.
