The Orange Island Project Comes to an End

The Orange Island project comes to an end

Parting with friends is never easy, no matter where and how you met them. The Orange Island project has reached its final stage: on the 29th of September 2009, we’ll be holding our final event, and move to new horizons, after two years of events in and around virtual worlds.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our closing event on Tuesday 29th September, to share our (and your) findings about virtual worlds… and beyond. We invite you to join us at 11 am SLT on Orange Island’s Lower Plaza Auditorium for a casual, open meeting with the team behind Orange Island and some insightful guests. We hope to see you there!

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Orange%20Island/195/134/31

To follow up on the event, we’ll also release a document that sums up some of our findings, which we’ll share with you on this website the first week of October. Stay tuned!

Together we did more

When Orange entered Second Life in October 2007, most RL brands and companies were leaving the platform. We set out to find out more, learning by doing, inspired and guided by the many talented, creative, innovative folks we met in and around SL. We thought we’d help them connect, share and collaborate, in a place that could also be their own. And so, Orange Island was born.

Orange Island was an experimental project aimed at getting a better understanding of virtual worlds. We wanted to learn about users and their cultures, content creation and collaboration, and the challenges of immersive, real-time social environments. Two years later, it’s safe to say that together we really did more. You and us played, explored, talked and created, we shared our passions and made many meaningful encounters. Because, as you know so well, there is no such thing as virtual memories – only real experiences.

We hope you too are proud of what we achieved together. Thank you for creating Orange Island with us.

5 Questions to the Artists of Rocking the Metaverse - (Orange Island)

5 Questions to the Artists of Rocking the Metaverse
posted by Eric Arkright of Orange

"Friday night, I was meeting with Dizzy Banjo, Doubledown Tandino, Grace McDunnough, Poid Mahovlich and Slim Warrior, who will be part of Rocking the Metaverse. This never seen before music tour will gather five of the foremost musicians of Second Life and take them over four venues: Second Life (in our auditorium), ReactionGrid on OpenSim, Twinity and Metaplace.

I planned to ask them about the present and future of music in virtual worlds, but due to my sheer noobyness at conducting interviews, most of it was done over email. During our chat though, we experimented chatting in dual reality mode, since we all logged on to Metaplace while talking via voice in Second Life.

The first concert of the Rocking the Metaverse tour will take place tomorrow, 19th May at 1pm SLT, on Orange Island. Dont’ event think of missing such an historic event! Read the interview after the jump.

Dizzy Banjo (Robert Thomas) is a composer as well as a performing artist from London. He talks about music, virtual worlds and all the experiments you can have with them on his blog.
Grace McDunnough is a renowned musician on Second Life, and she also designs virtual experiences. You can read (and hear) more about her on her website.
Jax Streeter wasn’t booked when we met, so he’s not part of the interview. But you can listen to his music on his site.
Doubledown Tandino (Brad Reason) is a well known SL and RL performer from Florida. He blogs about the web and social media, and we recommend you listen to his music.
Slim Warrior (SlimGirlFat) is the first UK musician to perform live on Second Life. Her Myspace is full of musical goodness.
Poid Mahovlich is one of the most experienced SL photographer. Perhaps because she’s also a on in RL. View her galleries on Flickr and Koinup or read her blog.
Koinup Editor (Pierluigi Casolari) is the co-founder of koinup.com, the main ressource for virtual world art. He’s the main organiser of Rocking the Metaverse. He couldn’t make it to the meetup, but he was kind enough to answer my questions...."

MURKU, the HUD to make comics in Second Life - Thursday April 23rd, 2009 - 12pm (slt)

Always wondering how to make comics within Second Life? This next session will be a good occasion to discover a great tool: the Murku Comic HUD. As you can see in the picture below, Deep Semaphore, the creator of Murku, did an amazing job gathering all the features you need to make a good looking comic book without leaving Second Life.

Contests are very exciting for photographers. Beside getting prizes, they are a great way to meet people and exchange about making artworks in SL. That’s why the Koinup Second Life Community is pleased to participate in the SL Comics Contest. (rules)

Join us Thursday 23rd of April at 12.00pm SLT on the Orange Island Photo Gallery.

The session will consist in a presentation of the rules, a “how to use the Murku HUD” class and some words about storytelling.

Behind this contest is Deep Semaphore, creator of the Murku HUD. It is a great tool that lets you create comics frames within Second Life.

You can view a tutorial for using the Murku HUD here. To grab the HUD inwolrd, please visit here.

Orange Island Celebrates its 1st Anniversary!

Orange Island

One year…
One year of highly interesting encounters, with you, visiting residents, content creators, shakers and stirrers of the metaverse.

One year of entertaining discussions and creative exchanges, around photography, machinima, media (new and old), music, games, innovation & geekiness, identity… not to mention all the interesting classes, concerts, and fun experiences we shared.

One year of turning the Orange sims upside down with ephemerous builds, art & photo installations, geeky demos and a ‘we’ll-never-know-if-it’s-a-record’-breaking family picture featuring over 100 avatars.

One year of opening up to other communities, content designers and event organizers, sharing the experience of innovative partnerships (FFRC, La Cantine, Orange Labs, Koinup, Metanomics, MadPea) and supporting creative projects (the Create Programme).

We’d like to thank you all for contributing to the life of a highly appreciated island. Dropping names would take up a lot of space, although something like that might actually happen in-world on Tuesday, on Orange Island, during our anniversary celebration.

READ THE FULL STORY AND INFO HERE
& HERE on HERDPRESS.com

If you’re into the music scene in Second Life, then you know that a good music performance requires three human elements: a musician (or musicians), fans (people who listen to the musician), and a venue owner (person who hosts the performance).

Musicians receive the bulk of attention at live music events, and rightly so, because their talent is the focus of entertainment. But there are some places in Second Life that deserve some recognition for the creative value that they add to their events and to the Second Life community as a whole. And so Orange Island is organizing a music festival next Tuesday that celebrates wonderfully talented musicians and also creative venues.

As each musician takes the stage Tuesday on Orange Island, the environment around everyone will transform into a representation of that venue as it exists in its original location. So although everyone will be at Orange Island, there will be a feeling of being at someplace else. Landmark dispensers will deliver landmarks to the actual locations in-world to anyone who would like one.
The transforming music festival is scheduled for 1pm to 6pm on Tuesday, October 28th, and we have a really diverse lineup:

Preshow ambient and triphop sounds provided by DJ Doubledown Tandino
1PM: Kourosh Eusebio (electronica) sponsored by Orange Island
2PM: Slim Warrior (electronica/club/down-tempo) sponsored by Menorca
3PM: Cylindrian Rutabaga (country/folk) sponsored by Avilion Isle
4PM: Ish and Neekie Lednev (jazz) sponsored by The Blue Note
5PM: Frogg and Jaycatt Nico (folk/blues) sponsored by Luskwood

Innovation Week at Orange Island - September 29th through October 3rd

Join us for our new focus week dedicated to innovation in virtual worlds. Innovation is crucial because it has a major influence on the improvement of our daily life in this world. Innovation is more than often generated by creative residents who design new features or services to improve the user experience.

Innovation is also important to Orange. We are happy to welcome some speakers from Orange Labs who are currently working on new user interfaces, and from the Orange Telco 2.0 initiative, who’ll be introducing their API program for Second Life developers.

The mission of the Orange Island Team is to help people share and collaborate in Second Life. During this week, we will discover how the innovation process works so we can cooperate on making this world a better place.

CLICK HERE for all info & schedule of events for Innovation Week.
Please check back next week for a detailed daily schedule.

April 24 - Virtual Africa Launch - Second Life Africa

VIRTUAL AFRICA / SECOND LIFE AFRICA
=====-----=====
OPENING DAY EVENT - April 24
Please come and join us on Thursday 24 April for an exiting programme on the first annual Africa Day in Second Life, hosted by Uthango with support of Orange from their island. ‘Virtual Africa’ and the adjacent ‘Robben Island’ with its African Rain (club) will be launched on the same day!
The popular DJ Doubledown will conclude the day at 16:30 SLT with a party for our guests at the new, spectacular African Rain, a club for Virtual Africa, designed partly pro-bono by Eshi Otawara.

this is the SL Africa club slurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Robben%20Island/120/161/635

Virtual Africa is an initiative of Uthango Social Investments, a registered NGO based in Cape Town, South Africa. You are welcome to check CIPRO the offical SA Registrar of Companies for our details or contact us via our company's Co-Founder and Director in-world, Alanagh Recreant.

Virtual Africa is currently in development and will become a unique Orientation Gateway that may add value to the SL experience for old and new residents in the metaverse. Uthango drives the project together with a small team of volunteers and (soon) professional developers, and welcomes you to collaborate and discuss possibilities. We were delighted to hear Philip Rosedale, CEO of LL, speaking about the importance of these gateways and look forward to bring you a special african immersive environment.

Together with Virtual Africa, we plan the Bottom-of-the-Pyramic Innovation Centre that will showcase ingenuity in Africa and for Africa - specifically in relation to the strategies of companies and social entrepreneurs to make the world a better place. This is one of our main reasons for being in SL - to connect with creative, lateral-thinking people that could solve complex problems - like the ones we face daily in our first world. In this context, we are also busy with the pototype of the Uthango African Roundtable aimed at educational institutions that would like to spend time researching the views of people in Africa. Hopefully, we will soon be able to bring in the voices of african residents as well, as SL is currently a bit skew in its global diversity :)

You are welcome to join our group: Second Life Africa to keep track of our developments, or the following blog: http://slafrica.wordpress.com/

Uthango has been extremely fortunate to be in the media the past few months, which has hightened the SL profile in Africa and globally: Here are a few links:

WEEKEND ARGUS: http://www.slnn.com/article/africa-second-life/

AFRICA NEWS: http://www.africanews.com/site/list_messages/10271

Your financial support is appreciated, but more than this, we really treasure the interest in our work and your own social network. Please feel free to tell others about our projects and visit our website: http://uthango.org/

We can only be here with integrity if we find specific ways to harness the power of virtual worlds for Africa and our 18 461 real life clients that are NOT here today... Please assist us in doing so! We need all the help we can get...

Thank you very much!
See you soon!
----
Personal note from Eshi Otawara:
"That week I have learned of some of the very difficult (as well as some shocking) issues South African people live with every day and I got a completely different perspective on what Uthango's efforts are. I have also spent some time with Alanagh Recreant and got to know her beyond the 'social networker' that she is. I have always admired her drive to keep Uthango's presence in SL and doing so very successfully for a much longer time then most companies do with plenty of resources- so getting to know what made Alanagh to commit her life to this kind of work was inspiring to me.
IT was one of those strange moments when you feel the person next to you might have just seen the same image in their head, but you cannot talk about it much because verbalizing it only waters down the experience. We both agreed Africa needs 'rain', and African Rain was born.
It was intended to be a 'vision in a brief moment in time' - something dreamlike yet achievable - more then a 'building' for people to come and inhabit. I used huge prims to separate the vision from the rest of the 'world' or even to protect it, and tried to best translate the image and emotion I experienced upon learning more about the Uthango project." --Eshi Otawara
