Second Life Bloggers - Mixed and Matched

Mixed and Matched
Friday, October 24, 2008

Readers will know I love to try new things, and I had an idea to include guest posts from other bloggers on I approached blogger extraordinary Vint Falken with this notion and we began talking about it, and before long we came up with the crazy-ass idea of doing Random guest posts! Yes, that's right – we want to recruit willing and able SL bloggers to submit themselves to our first annual Mix and Match Blog Carnival.

Here's how it works. You'll enter the contest specifying a topic and your blog information. On the designated day, Vint and I will randomly mix and match all the entries and come up with your blog assignment. In other words, we'll notify you that you must write a post on this topic on that blog. And it must be good, of course. We want all the entries to be published on the same day; it will make for some very interesting reading. Oh, you want specifics?

Orange Island Celebrates its 1st Anniversary!

Orange Island

One year…
One year of highly interesting encounters, with you, visiting residents, content creators, shakers and stirrers of the metaverse.

One year of entertaining discussions and creative exchanges, around photography, machinima, media (new and old), music, games, innovation & geekiness, identity… not to mention all the interesting classes, concerts, and fun experiences we shared.

One year of turning the Orange sims upside down with ephemerous builds, art & photo installations, geeky demos and a ‘we’ll-never-know-if-it’s-a-record’-breaking family picture featuring over 100 avatars.

One year of opening up to other communities, content designers and event organizers, sharing the experience of innovative partnerships (FFRC, La Cantine, Orange Labs, Koinup, Metanomics, MadPea) and supporting creative projects (the Create Programme).

We’d like to thank you all for contributing to the life of a highly appreciated island. Dropping names would take up a lot of space, although something like that might actually happen in-world on Tuesday, on Orange Island, during our anniversary celebration.

& HERE on

If you’re into the music scene in Second Life, then you know that a good music performance requires three human elements: a musician (or musicians), fans (people who listen to the musician), and a venue owner (person who hosts the performance).

Musicians receive the bulk of attention at live music events, and rightly so, because their talent is the focus of entertainment. But there are some places in Second Life that deserve some recognition for the creative value that they add to their events and to the Second Life community as a whole. And so Orange Island is organizing a music festival next Tuesday that celebrates wonderfully talented musicians and also creative venues.

As each musician takes the stage Tuesday on Orange Island, the environment around everyone will transform into a representation of that venue as it exists in its original location. So although everyone will be at Orange Island, there will be a feeling of being at someplace else. Landmark dispensers will deliver landmarks to the actual locations in-world to anyone who would like one.
The transforming music festival is scheduled for 1pm to 6pm on Tuesday, October 28th, and we have a really diverse lineup:

Preshow ambient and triphop sounds provided by DJ Doubledown Tandino
1PM: Kourosh Eusebio (electronica) sponsored by Orange Island
2PM: Slim Warrior (electronica/club/down-tempo) sponsored by Menorca
3PM: Cylindrian Rutabaga (country/folk) sponsored by Avilion Isle
4PM: Ish and Neekie Lednev (jazz) sponsored by The Blue Note
5PM: Frogg and Jaycatt Nico (folk/blues) sponsored by Luskwood

Crap Mariner Wants SL Musician's Sell it to Him!

Message sent from Crap Mariner:

Crazy Idea Time

Howdy... Crap Mariner here.
I'm sending you this info because you are involved in music in SL in some way or fashion.
Since I'm so difficult to shop for, I got a lot of iTunes gift cards for the holidays last year.
I'm sure a lot of you ended up with gift cards and such like that.
Well, I spent all the credits on SL-related musicians.

I also collected up URLs to iTunes download pages for SL musicians in case anybody else wanted to do the same as I did.

This year, I'd like to do it again, posting a catalog of links on my weblog as well as posting the album covers and links in my Clocktower on Edloe Island. Or, if someone's got a higher-profile venue out there with plenty of prims to spare, I'd be glad to help collect up and maintain the textures and links through the holiday season.

Anyway, if you're a performer with your music on iTunes, I'd love to know where to find it on iTunes and if you've got the album cover already uploaded into SL.

if you're a venue owner and are willing to post a landmark-giver or poster, let me know and I'll get one to you when the project gets rolling.

If you think the Clocktower just ain't good enough for hosting such a project and you've got an even better place, well, I'm never one to let pride get in the way of a project's success (just look at my name, eh) - let me know and I'll be glad to build this up for your location.

Anyway, thanks for keeping the grid humming with music, and hopefully we can help boost y'all's sales with the holiday season.

Art Galleries of Second Life: The List

This list was created on 5/1/2006 by Sasun Steinbeck and has been maintained since then for the benefit of the wonderful galleries, artists and art lovers in Second Life. Spend some time visiting the galleries and museums by clicking below to visit, spend generously to support the many excellent artists making Second Life such a beautiful and creative place, and send the gallery owners a word of thanks if you enjoyed their gallery!

The lists below are updated weekly on Sunday nights. If you are a gallery owner and would like to join the list, please go get a kiosk and rez it at your gallery. The kiosk will give you detailed instructions on how to be automatically added to the list.

When in world, be sure to click one of the gallery kiosks found at any of the locations below to get your gallery tour HUDs that make it easy and fun to visit more art galleries in Second Life. Enjoy!
About the kiosks
The kiosk system used for the gallery list was designed and scripted by me. It is an advanced version of the Kiosk.Net system sold by me commercially. The kiosks contain a notecard that is customized with gallery-specific data by the gallery owner - the gallery name, contact name, gallery type, website, etc. This data is stored in a custom SQL database on that is dumped every sunday night to a custom script that converts the database into three output forms: plain text for the in-world notecards that are distributed by the kiosks, data for the in-world gallery tour HUDs also distributed by the kiosks, and HTML that I can copy into this blog showing the entire list by category. The SLURLs are stored as a location a few feet in front of the kiosks, so updating your gallery location is a snap, just move your kiosk and your SLURL will be updated automatically in the database. This makes maintenance of a huge list like this possible. I just give out the kiosks, and the users fill them out. The rest is automatic except for the weekly blog updates which doesn't take too much time.
I am currently working to bring this same system to market with some innovative kiosk functionality that will make this system perfect for people that want to make lists of locations or collect data from large numbers of sites or advertisers wishing to give out items or freebies in large number of locations across the grid in a reliable, scalable manner.

Doubledown's Dinky Rants - Go Take Your Bucket Somewhere Else! There's Plenty of Beach!

When I go to the beach, I like to build little castles and dig mindlessly. Once in awhile I get a little kid, perhaps 5 or 6, that wants to offer his or her opinion... and perhaps start building with me.

Now this annoys me. Perhaps it's because I know what's to follow. My casual leisurely random digging and building has now become a partnership with a 5 year old that feels his opinions on the project are in dire need of initiation. Plus, there are plenty of errors this 5 year old points out to show how my previous work can be improved now that he's here. AND... he's got a bucket..... ....but, he's a 5 year old, so I let the kid do his thing, and we hang out and build what he wants.

Perhaps the reason I'd rather build sandcastles alone is because I always got a "needs improvement" under "does not work well with others" on my grade school report cards. Perhaps it's because I just wanna lie on the beach, fiddle with sand at my own pace, and not think about starting a collaboration with a 5 year old.

Now, lets move to Second Life. If you see me, or anyone building.... in a sandbox, or on private land, it's okay to watch the creative building process, but PLEASE, don't start offering opinions, and PLEASE don't start collabo building onto a project while spouting out how the build could be much better with your help. Sometimes, people just wanna dig in sand alone.

Four Words I Invented Added to the English Lexicon

As Brad Reason (me in real life), i've invented words. Many people invent words. It's fun.

However, what's totally awesome, is that apparently, after submitting hundreds of words and definitions to Websters Dictionary ( aka ).... four specific words I have created in the past have actually been moved onward to now be considered part of the English lexicon. I can't believe people are actually using my words! That's sooo cool!! Potentially, these words may appear in future English language dictionaries.

Metapperatus - (Meh-tap-per-a-tis) noun. - An all encompassing tool used in a virtual world to make interactions and processes easier. (Users of the word have shortened it to 'metapper').
This word was winner of the Electrolux Invent-a-word Contest in 2007

IMbidextrous - (Eye-em-bih-dex-tris) adj. - Equally skilled in completing computer tasks while maintaining multiple instant message conversations.
example: "WOW! You are surfing the web and talking to someone else while you're IMing me too? You're very IMbidextrous."

Stappenstance - (Stap-in-stance) interjection. - What is happening. Short for 'What is the happenstance?"
example: Stappenstance? Nada, just chillin'.

Gigashits - (Gig-a-shitz) adjective, noun, or interjection. - Something computer related (equipment or software) that is superb, top-of-the-line, futuristic, or digitally impressive.
example: That new 70 inch flatscreen is the gigashits!

I hope you enjoy my words.

Announcing SECONDSTOCK Music Festival, October 24-26, 2008 in Second Life

The SECONDSTOCK MUSIC FESTIVAL is a re-creation of the original Woodstock held in 1969 in upstate New York. Coming OCTOBER 24-26 to Second Life on the Secondstock Sim with over 40 Secondlife musicians, psychedelic vendors, and amazing realism in a fun replication of this era in American history.

“SECONDSTOCK” Music Festival!! 40+ Performers and 3 Days of Peace and Music October 24-26 in Second Life

SECONDSTOCK, September 10, 2008 – Many of the top music performers in Second Life will join emerging stars for the First SECONDSTOCK music festival coming the last weekend of October 24-26, 2008. Located on the new Secondstock SIM in Second Life, the site is being transformed into a full region festival playground for those who love to rock and always wished they could have attended the original Woodstock in 1969.

Woodstock…it was the Age of Aquarius…a three day gathering of the greatest musicians of the era performing for 300,000 people on the rolling hills of Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York. Journey back to a time of Vietnam War protest music, acid rock, hippies, psychedelically painted school buses, and a music festival called Woodstock – 3 Days of Peace and Music.

Experience a realistic re-creation of the Woodstock music festival with all the ambiance and memories of the original. In Max Yasgur’s barn at Secondstock be sure to visit the exhibit created by the curators of Second Life’s Museum of Music (MUMU) on Infotainment Island. The historical exhibits at the Secondstock barn museum showcase pictures, props, and films from the original Woodstock and the events of the period. Festival visitors can stay at the campground and skinny dip in the Secondstock Lake plus relax under the oak trees at impromptu music sessions around the large fire pit.

Musicians arrive by helicopter to the main stage complete with music towers and a massive performer background display. A large vendor area of open tents provide festival goers the opportunity to purchase psychedelic clothing outfits, hippie paraphernalia, food, accessories, musical instruments, art, textures, jewelry, and other simply groovy stuff.

Neither Woodstock not Secondstock would be complete without plenty of Port-O-San porta potties, rows of outdoor phones, the First Aid tent, and marijuana plants hidden in the cornfields. NO MORE RAIN!! NO MORE RAIN!! Afternoon thunder showers were the norm in upstate New York in the summer of 1969 and at Secondstock as well (along with mud slide fun and craziness). The film documentary made about the original Woodstock won an Academy award and festival goers can relive the film ahead of time with a quick search on YouTube (Woodstock 1969 – 3 Days of Peace and Music).

“SECONDSTOCK intends to be one of Second Life’s biggest and most exciting summer concert events”, says Merck Forager, CEO of Secondstock Entertainment, which is promoting and producing the event.

“We’ve got an unbelievable lineup in the works that celebrates Second Life’s top musical artists,” Forager explains. “We’ve designed an event with a realistic flavor in Second Life that will transport you back in time. This kind of event has been long overdue in Second Life.”

Tickets are free but for more information visit

. Please come anytime before the festival to look around and to support our vendors. At the music festival be sure to come dressed for the event. Groovy!

See you October 24-26, 2008 at SECONDSTOCK!!

Innovation Week at Orange Island - September 29th through October 3rd

Join us for our new focus week dedicated to innovation in virtual worlds. Innovation is crucial because it has a major influence on the improvement of our daily life in this world. Innovation is more than often generated by creative residents who design new features or services to improve the user experience.

Innovation is also important to Orange. We are happy to welcome some speakers from Orange Labs who are currently working on new user interfaces, and from the Orange Telco 2.0 initiative, who’ll be introducing their API program for Second Life developers.

The mission of the Orange Island Team is to help people share and collaborate in Second Life. During this week, we will discover how the innovation process works so we can cooperate on making this world a better place.

Please check back next week for a detailed daily schedule.
