November 5th: A Reminder to STEP UP! Against Content Theft in Second Life

Step UP! Make your voice heard about Content Theft

For more information on Step UP! SL please visit our blog:
http://stepupsl.wordpress.com/

You are also invited to join our Step UP! Ning Group:
http://step-up-sl.ning.com/

November 5th – Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night in the UK.

Action:
a) On this day –
no-one uploads textures to the grid.
This should show the economic power of people acting together, without harming content creators. We want Linden Lab to see the power of the feeling about the problem of content theft – and to discuss urgently strategies for tackling it.
b) As many people as possible wear an orange ribbon as a sign of support for creators. And creators can design these – they can be lapel ribbons, they can be arm bands, they can be tee-shirts … the idea is to make the orange ribbon the theme of the day. And everyone who gets a free orange ribbon gets an information sheet – explaining what content theft is, what they can do about it etc. And they also get an information pack that they can give to their friends (which also contains an orange ribbon for their friends). Why orange? It’s been used before, but has no overwhelming association (unlike pink or red ribbons). It’s a bright, noticeable colour. It suggests explosions and colour …
And it’s an opportunity for stores and content creators to become involved too.

Celebration:
The day ends with parties. Bonfire parties. That means that all around the grid, people have parties. We’re not going to be trying to stage Big Events that maybe only 60 or 70 people can cram into. Instead we encourage every club to hold a Step Up! party. We encourage every musician to play Step UP! events. Everyone on the grid has a part to play. Everyone can take part.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

Breaking the 4th Wall

The fourth wall refers to the imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage in a proscenium theatre, through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play. The term also applies to the boundary between any fictional setting and its audience. When this boundary is "broken" (for example by an actor speaking to the audience directly through the camera in a television sitcom), it is called "breaking the fourth wall."

Origin and meaning:

The term was made explicit by Denis Diderot[1] and spread in nineteenth century theatre with the advent of theatrical realism. Critic Vincent Canby described it in 1987 as "that invisible screen that forever separates the audience from the stage."[2] Another among early practitioners of this method (now referred to as the "Fourth Wall") is Thornton Wilder & his 1937 play "Our Town". The term "fourth wall" stems from the absence of a fourth wall on a three-walled set where the audience is viewing the production. The audience is supposed to assume there is a "fourth wall" present, even though it physically is not there. This is widely noticeable on various television programs, such as sitcoms, but the term originated in theatre, where conventional three-walled stage sets provide a more obvious "fourth wall". The term "fourth wall" has been adapted to refer to the boundary between the fiction and the audience. "Fourth wall" is part of the suspension of disbelief between a fictional work and an audience. The audience will accept the presence of the fourth wall without giving it any direct thought, allowing them to enjoy the fiction as if they were observing real events. The presence of a fourth wall is one of the best established conventions of fiction and as such has led some artists to draw direct attention to it for dramatic or comedic effect. This is known as "breaking the fourth wall". For instance, in Puckoon, Spike talks to the author multiple times. Spike also at one stage in the book, looks to see what page the reader is on. Besides theatre and cinema, the term has been adopted by other media, such as television, comics, and more recently, video games. Though some table-top roleplaying games do allow for breaking the fourth wall, these are usually beer and pretzel type games.

Step UP! Make your voice heard about Content Theft

Make your voice heard about Content Theft

In the wake of the wholesale theft of sims and content over the weekend, like many people we wanted to do something about it --and also about all the other content theft that we have been fighting for so long -- in the Content Creators Association and in magazines and on TV shows. Th Step Up! campaign is centred on a special day of action that everyone can become involved with, and that can empower and inform people.

Step UP! kiosks are now available on XStreet

kiosks available on XStreet.and you should find them at tinyurl.com/ydlpely, or you can search on Step UP!  They are, of course, free.

The start of Step UP!

Step Up!

We are aiming for a day that draws together action, education and celebration. We want a focus that empowers people – and rather than dictates to people, allows them to express their own creativity in a variety of ways. It also draws attention to the strength of feeling that there is here on the grid.
2) We need to make people feel empowered by what they do. And, because we are hardly the most time-free people on the grid – we need something that they can largely organize themselves!
So these are our thoughts: We are nominating a day as Step UP! Day – which will be
November 5th – Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night in the UK.

Action:
a) On this day –
no-one uploads textures to the grid.
This should show the economic power of people acting together, without harming content creators. We want Linden Lab to see the power of the feeling about the problem of content theft – and to discuss urgently strategies for tackling it.
b) As many people as possible wear an orange ribbon
as a sign of support for creators.

Education:
This is going to come in several forms.
1) Info pack
These will be given out with orange ribbons in stores and at parties.
2) Media
Audio and Visual service ads. The Press. The Blogsphere – everyone can play there part in getting out the message that we have had enoufgh, and we have chosen to Step UP! against content theft.
3) Video
Short informational films – tutorials about content theft.
On the Designing Worlds shows we’ve talked again and again about the need for a social shift – so that people see content theft as socially and morally unacceptable. So … let’s go for it!
Watch this space for more details on how you can become involved, and how you can share with us your plans for Step UP! Day.
The concept originates with a small group – Angie Mornington, Gabrielle Riel, Gwen Carillon and Saffia Widdershins. But more and more people are now becoming involved. And you can too.

Selling my Second Life Group: "Live Turntable DJs"

For over 3 years, I've done my best to establish a promotional, networking, and collaboration group for the Live Turntable DJs and DJ fans of Second Life.   I have done my best to sort out the DJs, the Event Promoters, and the music lovers in SL.  Back when this group first started in SL,  there were NO live turntable djs.  There wasn't even a difference in classification of the type of DJs in SL.  I made this group because I needed to show Second Life that a "playlisting" DJ is not a real turntable mix DJ.   Since then, Second Life has blossomed into a full fledged Live Turntable DJ community.

Now the time has come where I am looking to sell this group.  The reason why I am selling it is because of the extreme time and effort I've invested in making this group special.  Furthermore, the future owner of this group will have full access to over 1000 members, over 300 DJs, and over 300 club and event promoters.  This group is a high value opportunity for any DJ agency, club looking to book DJs, club looking to hire quality staff, and a effective method for DJ, club, and event needs.  If you are in the club business & music entertainment industry inworld, you will find this group is an excellent investment.

Link to the group: http://world.secondlife.com/group/17cd56a2-2f19-74c2-8cb8-e5142bf1f5d0

If you have any questions, inquiries, or simply want to know why I am selling this group, please email me at DJDoubledown (at) gmail.com
If there are no qualifying buyers, the group will be shut down sometime between September 5th and September 9th.

Here is your chance to jump on a tremendous opportunity filled with contacts that will make your Second Life entertainment business catapult to success.

Once again, email me ASAP at DJDoubledown (at) gmail.com with any questions. Please act fast.
(Doubledown Tandino in SL)

Thank you.

P.S.  I am not getting rid of this group because "I am tired of it"  ... It pains me to have to let this group go.  Hopefully the new owner will continue onward with the ideals I set out for the group.

Doubledown's List of Koinup Groups

Many people have noticed I've been passionately pumping out crazy category Koinup groups.
Here's a list of the groups I've created on Koinup. If any of these categories fits your expertise, let me know if you'd like to be an administrator. I created these groups, but don't want to "own" them alone. Please check out all of the Koinup groups HERE and the groups joined by your friends HERE
