The Concept:
By Soror Nishi via sorornishi.blogspot.com
We all know that the tree has been a meeting place, a landmark, shelter and a source of warmth (firewood) and food (fruit) for a very long time and, globally.
It is no real surprise then to read.... “the commonest associations to it’s meaning are growth, life, unfolding of form in a physical and spiritual sense, development, growth from below upwards and from above downwards, the maternal aspect (protection, shade, shelter, nourishing fruits, source of life, solidity, permanence, firm-rootedness, but also being “rooted to the spot”), old age, personality, and finally death and rebirth.” [CGJung].
It was a symbol taken up in many an alchemical treatise to signify the development of The Work, the Opus, and was often called The Philosophical Tree as the gold (goal) was called The Philosophical Gold. It was said to grow out of the salt water with a golden trunk and seven branches with the sun and moon as fruit.
There are not many cultures who do not have a tree included either in a creation myth or a significant fairy story for, presumably, the tree was our first home or shelter. Even in places where no tree grows naturally, their imagery is included in myth.
“In so far as the tree symbolizes the Opus and the transformation process “tam ethice quam physice” (both morally and physically), it also signifies the life process in general. It’s identity with Mercurius, the spiritus vegetativus, confirms this view. Since the Opus is a life, death, and rebirth mystery, the tree as well acquires this significance and in addition the quality of wisdom...” [CGJung].
Well, this is just some philosophical background into why I have called my build at IBM Tree of Trees. Add to that my feeling for trees, in general, and it’s not so hard to see why I have spent three years trying to improve the basic bio-diversity of the very dodgy flora I first encountered when I came to SL.
I think my build at IBM is a sort of milestone, it says, well, this is how far I’ve got so far.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have building it.
- Soror Nishi

The people are talking:
Chestnut's Choices 9/9 - 9/15 via New World Notes:
"On Saturday 9/11 at Noon soror Nishi's new exhibt Tree of Trees opens. Soror Nishi's work captivated my interest from the first time I saw it early in my SL experience. She uses Blender and Photoshop to make her pieces, preferring to paint textures rather than photograph them. Soror creates trees and landscapes but they are nothing like what you might expect to find in the countryside in the atomic world. Her colorful work is art that is only possible in the creative space of a virtual world.
Music for the Opening Party will be provided by DJ Tasty Hax beginning at noon with a show by DJ Doubledown Tandino at 1pm. At 3pm the fantastic live band The Born Again Pagans will entertain visitors to this otherworldy, colorful exhibit. I know you will enjoy this stunning exhibit as much as I did, especially with fantastic music as the backdrop to your experience. In IBM Exhibit C."

Announcing the Linden Endowment for the Arts
In the upcoming months, it is our pleasure to take a more active role in encouraging the arts inside of Second Life. We are excited to announce the creation of a Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) program which will help support, encourage, and highlight Second Life artists and their work. We hope that the collaboration between Linden Lab and the wealth of talented Second Life artists will contribute to a vibrant new chapter for the arts in Second Life.
The Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) program's goal is twofold:
Getting Involved
Whether you're interested in joining the committee or simply have a useful suggestion to share, don't be shy—go ahead and submit a LEA Committee Application or post your suggestions below. We are looking for a small but dedicated group of individuals who are willing to make an ongoing time commitment to this program. Got other thoughts? Post 'em below!
We can't wait to start working with the arts community on this tremendous endeavor. Stay tuned to the Community Blog as more information becomes available!

Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker - Monday December 28th - 5pm SLT
Monday 12/28 at 5pm - Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker
Via Chestnut's Choices on New World Notes
Ballet Pixelle performs its version of the Nutcracker for those of you who have not yet seen this seasonal classic. You will be entertained by mysterious dancers on magic carpets, a Russian cossack stamping out a dance, a Chinese Empresses moving about the stage on delicate feet and Spanish senoritas throwing themselves flamboyantly. In IBM 10. [SLurl teleport at this link]
----
About:
Ballet Pixelle
Ballet Pixelle produces professional works that creatively enhance the viewer’s experience while attending a ballet performance. Audience members can see classical, neoclassical, contemporary, and novel ballets that cannot be seen elsewhere. New ballets are premiered with original stories, choreography, and music with dancers from around the world all dancing together in one space.
Unlike other ballet companies, Ballet Pixelle uses new technology to take the art form into a unique environment to new and existing spectators - the first and only of its kind. The company performs in and takes advantage of a 3D Internet virtual world called Second Life®. The company creatively utilizes unique aspects of the virtual reality, e.g., transforming from human into animal or growing old on stage. The ballet uses a new breed of dancers and a new classical ballet vocabulary created to take advantage of the innovative medium. The dancers are virtual representations of human beings (avatars). These avatars, or virtual dancers, are real people from around the globe – Bahrain, Chicago, Denmark, England, Germany, Hawaii, Holland, New York, Seattle, Scotland, and Washington DC – that come together to captivate audiences. Many are real life professionals.
By performing in an Internet virtual space, it breaks geo-
graphical boundaries and time zones, and it allows new spectators to enjoy, in a unique way, a ballet performance that they may have not experienced otherwise. Ballet Pixelle drives further awareness and appreciation for the art form.
“By the end of the first act, I realized that the same emotional response that real life dance can evoke is possible in the virtual realm.”—Pixeleen Mistral of the "Second Life Herald".
Ballet Pixelle’s debut on February 7, 2007, was the world premiere of a new and unique ballet, Olmannen, an original 3-act story written, choreographed, directed and staged in the virtual world of Second Life® at the Ballet Pixelle's Theatre hosted by IBM (IBM 10 (12,191,21).

Traci Nubalo - The Word - A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.
A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.
About Traci:
Hello Second Life music and arts lovers!
I'm Traci Nubalo and I'm a refugee from the RL music business, formerly an artist manager, tour manager, concert promoter and music journalist.
This blog is my effort to report on what makes our Second Life music/art scene interesting. It's about the people that make the scene happen and how they work their magic to thrill us and inspire us with their writing, singing, playing and creating. Look at it as the backstage pass that most of us longed for and were never able to get our hands on.
---
Below is an interview Traci had with Harrie Skjellerup and POL Arida of "The Originals"

The Originals: "Gotta Wear Shades!"
by Traci Nubalo
"In mid-August of last year a grand experiment was mounted in the Second Life live music community. Scottish singer/songwriter POL Arida, relatively new to SL, noticed that the musicians making up the club scene were playing mostly “covers” (non-original copies of popular songs). POL is a talented and prolific songwriter, and he decided to try to make an attempt to encourage original musical content here on the grid.
The result was an ongoing project that he called The Originals. The opening event featured a stellar lineup of talent all performing, of course, only original compositions. During that epic “original Originals” concert, POL enlisted the future help of longtime SL music supporter Harrie Skjellerup.
I recently sat with POL and Harrie at her Pixel Hill music venue and we reminisced about the origins of this amazing and important concert series.

M Linden is an Artist?!
I made it over to Dusan Writer's sophisticated uber-intellectual (that is a compliment) blog to read his reaction to Tateru Nino's exclusive interview with Linden Lab CEO Mark Kingdon (a.k.a M Linden) brought to you by Massively.
Both; the Massively interview, and Dusan's followup are not to be missed. Both are interesting, intriguing reads.
As Dusan points out: "...a wide-ranging interview with Tateru at Massively, which is not only a must-read but perhaps one of the best interviews I’ve ever read with someone from the Lab..."
I completely agree. It is probably the best interview Linden Lab has given to date.
I will sum it all up in two words: long tail.
But I digress.
I'm not here to comment, nor am I here to comment on Dusan's follow-up, nor am I here to follow-up on the follow up. I'm here to bring attention to this wonderful juicy nugget:
Brought to my attention by wizard gynoid in Dusan Writer's comments.
Here are a few M Linden pieces (no infringement is intended):
M Linden's artwork is cerebral, abstract, energetic, symmetrically cluttered... much like Second Life. His artwork sheds some light into what it must be like inside the brain of someone running a 20 million user metaverse.
Mark has over 700 pieces uploaded to his Flickr stream. I urge and encourage you to check out his stuff.

The Gracie Kendal Project - An Exploration of Self and Art
by Gracie Kendal
For as far back as my memory allows, I had never found myself in a place I felt comfortable. My world has been in a constant state of change since I graduated High School, actually since my parents divorced when I was 12. I have moved in and out of my mom and stepdad’s house, had several roommates, had over 16 cars in 20 years of driving, changed my hair more times than I care to say, fluctuated my weight with the rising and setting of the sun and the list goes on… Needless to say, I have not felt comfortable in my own skin.
When I joined the web 2.0 virtual world known as Second Life www.secondlife.com, it was probably the first time I felt at home. My life within Second Life has remained pretty constant from the time I started. I bought a house and land and have lived there for almost 3 years now. My avatar, virtual representation, has pretty much remained the same. I have had the same body from the beginning and have only had a couple hairstyles that I have kept. In fact, I normally wear the same clothes, consisting of my jeans with paint splatters, a black t-shirt or tank top, my glasses and my Chuck Taylors. This is who I am. I am comfortable in this alternative/virtual skin, within my avatar known as Gracie Kendal. Although I still have deep personal issues I am working through in real life, I am consistantly inspired by who I am in Second Life. My avatar allows me to be free. I often feel more confident and I’m not scared to say what I feel. I know, that my avatar is run by who I am in real life. So the confidence and self esteem I exude in second life, does come from my real life self. But I don’t know where in my real life self it comes from. I want to explore this relationship more fully in this project.
I am currently a Graduate student in art at CSU Northridge. The current artwork I am creating, has to do with my identity in both real life and second life.
On November 1st, I started documenting my life in both worlds. This is going to be an ongoing project. I am going to document how Gracie Kendal inspires me to be a better person. I am going to show on a day to day basis, my real life self (I hate pictures of me, so this is not something I am taking lightly) juxtaposed with Gracie. We are both going to go on an exploration of our selves. And we will see where it leads. I am posting the documentation which I started on November 1st, and will try to keep up the blog on a daily basis. I would love any suggestions or critique you’d like to offer. Thank you so much for your support.

About the kiosks
The kiosk system used for the gallery list was designed and scripted by me. It is an advanced version of the Kiosk.Net system sold by me commercially. The kiosks contain a notecard that is customized with gallery-specific data by the gallery owner - the gallery name, contact name, gallery type, website, etc. This data is stored in a custom SQL database that you can view live here on this website at any time. The SLURLs are stored as a location a few feet in front of the kiosks, so updating your gallery location is a snap, just move your kiosk and your SLURL will be updated automatically in the database. This makes maintenance of a huge list like this possible. I just give out the kiosks, and the users fill them out. The rest is automatic.Visit SasTech in Second Life here

Breaking the Fourth Wall
Breaking the 4th Wall
The fourth wall refers to the imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage in a proscenium theatre, through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play. The term also applies to the boundary between any fictional setting and its audience. When this boundary is "broken" (for example by an actor speaking to the audience directly through the camera in a television sitcom), it is called "breaking the fourth wall."Origin and meaning:
The term was made explicit by Denis Diderot[1] and spread in nineteenth century theatre with the advent of theatrical realism. Critic Vincent Canby described it in 1987 as "that invisible screen that forever separates the audience from the stage."[2] Another among early practitioners of this method (now referred to as the "Fourth Wall") is Thornton Wilder & his 1937 play "Our Town". The term "fourth wall" stems from the absence of a fourth wall on a three-walled set where the audience is viewing the production. The audience is supposed to assume there is a "fourth wall" present, even though it physically is not there. This is widely noticeable on various television programs, such as sitcoms, but the term originated in theatre, where conventional three-walled stage sets provide a more obvious "fourth wall". The term "fourth wall" has been adapted to refer to the boundary between the fiction and the audience. "Fourth wall" is part of the suspension of disbelief between a fictional work and an audience. The audience will accept the presence of the fourth wall without giving it any direct thought, allowing them to enjoy the fiction as if they were observing real events. The presence of a fourth wall is one of the best established conventions of fiction and as such has led some artists to draw direct attention to it for dramatic or comedic effect. This is known as "breaking the fourth wall". For instance, in Puckoon, Spike talks to the author multiple times. Spike also at one stage in the book, looks to see what page the reader is on. Besides theatre and cinema, the term has been adopted by other media, such as television, comics, and more recently, video games. Though some table-top roleplaying games do allow for breaking the fourth wall, these are usually beer and pretzel type games.
