Top 5 Augmented Reality Business Cards

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer.

New World Notes Advertises IMVU Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar* on Article About Second Life Advertising Avatar Like Avatar From *Avatar*

I'm so confused.... this is a screen capture of New World Notes, showing a screen capture of a Second Life webpage. On that Second Life page is an ad for an IMVU ad featuring a blue Avatar (to coincide with the movie "Avatar"). Ironically, on the New World Notes page happened to be another IMVU ad featuring the same blue Avatar.

I've got the Avatar blues. All these blue ads makes me finally want to click on that big-breasted Evony ad (which is probably showing up to the right hand side of my blog)

5 Things Every Band Should Know About Twitter (via TwtTip)

You'll notice I'm talking about Twitter a lot. Well, so is everyone else. You'll find a new great use for Twitter article written easily by visiting sites like mashable, techcrunch, and problogger's twttip. Here's a great gem just posted:

5 Things Every Band Should Know About Twitter
via TwtTip

By Owen Kelly of The Indie Digest. Follow him @ojkelly.

Image Credit: marfis75Twitter provides a unique opportunity to everyone that has never really existed before. Not only do you have the ability to follow every minute detail of your favorite band, but you can also have a conversation with them.

It’s often been said that twitter is like a bar full of people. You can listen or jump in with any conversation at the bar. Keep this in mind when you tweet.

If you just blurt out “Click here to see my new video!” Then you closely resemble the people handing out crappy pamphlets at the train station, that end up in the bin seconds later.

Anyone attempting to promote a product, be it a song, CD, or even a book, needs to be aware the usual rules do not apply on Twitter. It has evolved with its own set of rules and etiquette. To successfully promote your product you need to be aware of a few things.

The Artist's Guide to Marketing Yourself and Networking in Second Life

By Jeffrey Lipsky from ArtCalendar (The business magazine for visual artists)

In this article, we’re going to explore some ways you’ll be able to hit the ground running with marketing yourself in SL’s virtual art scene. There are many similarities to real life when it comes to presenting yourself to the inworld audiences of curators, collectors and other artists. For instance, there’s no better way to get your art in front of the right people than through word-of-mouth and networking. Incorporating both virtual and real world sensibilities into your marketing plan can be a powerful combination.

Doubledown's Web 2.0 Social Network Service Roundup - May 2009

Some interesting developments have occurred on the social network scene. If you're on any of the sites heavily, you'll notice each are making some screw-ball changes that uproar the community. It seems that each social network site that gets too big makes a major sloppy decision that marks the beginning of the end of the power-tool website. Prokofy calls it "jumping the shark" in regards to Twitter. I call it selling out. Same difference in these situations. It seems to always be the same scenario:

1) Site is used, site is highly awesome, giving away new net tools for free, site is spread
2) Many more people use, Site becomes popular
3) Site becomes mainstream as more powerful features are added
4) Site owners change specific features, limit abilities that were the initial cause of making the site popular, or change the layout, or offer an IPO, or change advertising features, etc
5) Active user base goes into an uproar threatening to quit forever. Through using the company's own social network against them, the user community boycotts and protests.
6) User numbers drop as corporations move in.
7) Site ends up still popular, however the tech geeks and power users have moved on to what is the next most powerful thing.... the thing that we'll all be on soon (Friendfeed for example).

A Social Network site reaches skyrocketing popularity when it's a 'for the people, by the people' site. Once the company goes all Republican, and starts catering to the corporations, or the elite users, or the payola users, the social network site that was once blossoming, get turned into an advertising spam farm mixed with teenagers wasting time (a la myspace). UPDATE: Aliza Sherman of the Web Worker Daily has this to say on the Growing Feedback Fiasco of Twitter and the general social networks 'company versus user base'.

I could be wrong, but I am predicting Twitter's peak was April 2009, and will head down fast just as Myspace did. However, right now, it's powerful, and the #1 most important currently.

Facebook has been battling with itself trying to become the new new new Facebook.

Meanwhile, FriendFeed is morphing into a twitter + facebook, however, it's only good in theory right now and not practical to use. It is very fast with it's real time spout of information though.

Youtube completely sold out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V025E_b5I4g

And of course Second Life (www.SecondLife.com) is dealing with a major shift because of new adult content terms & bot terms. That, plus the recent SL viewers and SL experience has been subpar lately.

But we still love em all, and use em all....

For right now, May 2009, here's what I recommend for the time-constrained web 2.0 user:

Use Twitter to its full potential. Right now Twitter is HOT, and using it to your needs WORKS right now, while the userbase is heavy and active. You may even want to consider twitter as another option to Google. With twitter, you can search for current news and info faster than google can bookmark it.

Sign up for Facebook. (make sure to sign up using your real name) Use it when you want. Facebook is your new myspace. It's good to have a facebook profile, even if you don't want to actively use it. Set it up to give yourself the full potential. Use the tools, and don't get sucked into the stupid invite games.

Sign up for FriendFeed and set it up. It's okay if you don't use it. Set it up to aggregate your status updates. This is your backup in case Twitter fails.

Sign up for Koinup (the virtual world photography and video social network). The users are bubbling with activity. Plus I believe Yahoo's Flickr will never be anything more than it is now. New photo and video sharing sites are much more powerful than Flickr.

Sign up for LinkedIn.com. Put a professional business profile up.

Plurk is a dud.... but sign up to it anyway. The Second Life user base on Plurk is HEAVY.

Use Tr.im as your link shortener.

Use Twitter and Digg for breaking news, and interesting articles/finds of the web.

Music: Reverbnation.com | (http://www.reverbnation.com/bradreason)
Sends and Receives through Facebook and Twitter

Don't forget about the upcoming virtual world: Metaplace

UPDATE: I'm keeping an eye on BLERP.... looks like the future of the internet.

Do you have an opinion about a social network site or tool that has been powerfully effective for you? Is there a popular web 2.0 site that should be mentioned? Please, post your thoughts in the comments.

Digital Marketing Speaker Series in Second Life

Digital Marketing Series in Second Life
via Joanna Scott's blog

This Wednesday, 22nd April, sees the first in a new series of live speaker events in Second Life. Organized in association with our colleagues at Palgrave Macmillan, Macmillan’s academic arm, we will feature a range of speakers all themed around the broad topic of Digital Marketing.

First up, Alycia de Mesa, the author of the new book Brand Avatar, will be speaking about virtual marketing and branding. Alycia will discuss what real life brand strategies to keep in mind when branding in-world as well as the burgeoning field of virtual branding.

We will be giving out a free sample chapter of the book to everyone who attends the event, and the book will be available to buy at a special 20% discount.

This is a departure from our previously purely scientific activities, specifically to introduce other parts of the Macmillan group to how great SL is, but I hope it will be very relevant to people in all genres, from multinationals to individuals.

All very welcome to attend: any questions, or if you would like to come but need some help getting started with Second Life, by all means email me at j.scott@nature.com or find me in SL as Joanna Wombat.

Title: Brand Avatar
Speaker: Alycia de Mesa
Date: Wednesday 22nd April
Time: 6pm BST / 10am PST/SLT
Venue: Khufu Conference Centre

-------

Doubledown Note: If you would like to see "Avatar Branding" in all of it's shining glory, check out Torley... and all that is Torley Lives. He's a walking, talking image of a branded avatar success story, and also he's a person, a Linden, and a very cool dude doing some amazing things in the world.

Doubledown's Web 2.0 Social Network Service Roundup - April 2009

The Daily Show With Jon StewartM - Th 11p / 10c
Twitter Frenzy
comedycentral.com
Daily Show Full EpisodesEconomic CrisisPolitical Humor

With Twitter skyrocketing in popularity these days, so much so that Google wants to buy it (UPDATE: It's BS, Google isn't buying Twitter) , Facebook taking in Myspace's users in droves, plus, mass confusion on whether Second Life is brimming with possibility & enterprise or falling into obscurity, AND EVEN the general state of the real world economy causing masses to play on the internet, I thought I would give my roundup as to what web 2.0 and social networking services I am currently using (and which ones I decided to stop using).

There are many bloggers and posters out there that have already concocted their best of lists and why they choose each service. There are going to be many more to come, including web 2.0 flowcharts, posts about blogging, blogs about posting, digging to tweeting to facebook.. oh my! All of which can get confusing. This is simply my personal favorites list currently.

Sidenote: I have completely left out any consideration regarding mobile technology. Simply put, I don't have and use a mobile device so I have yet to test.

Promotions, Promotional Events, Music, Audio, and The Music Biz in Second Life - Three Articles

Three interesting articles popped out today and were brought to my attention by Mal Burns
I find these posts very important. Bookmark the articles; they may come in handy for you some day.

Everything written in each article is worth the read, however, if I were to add my personal note for the reader, I would say that generally, articles about "how to run a successful event" or "how to run a successful promotion" explain the basics of how to technically and logistically create a basic event. For me, what is most effective about an event I create is the creativity, the guts, and the people involved. Finding ways to NOT fit the mold is what I feel works best in Second Life.

-----

Overview of Music and Audio in Second Life
"Second Life is a great place for people who enjoy listening to or creating music. People who like to listen to music will find a wide range of styles and unique venues to explore. Musicians can share their work with a global audience by performing live concerts in Second Life. It's also a unique opportunity for artists to directly connect with fans around the world, taking requests and communicating with them in a live environment. Just like playing a gig in Real Life, but without the hassle of carrying your gear around and traveling!
-----

The art and science of promotional events
Written by Rika Watanabe on Through the Broken Looking Glass

"...Repeat after me: Promotional events exist to promote sales and increase exposure. They don’t exist to promote hate and increase lag, which is what you’re doing! How exactly promotional events and most importantly, promotional giveaways promote sales?..."
