The Concept:
By Soror Nishi via sorornishi.blogspot.com
We all know that the tree has been a meeting place, a landmark, shelter and a source of warmth (firewood) and food (fruit) for a very long time and, globally.
It is no real surprise then to read.... “the commonest associations to it’s meaning are growth, life, unfolding of form in a physical and spiritual sense, development, growth from below upwards and from above downwards, the maternal aspect (protection, shade, shelter, nourishing fruits, source of life, solidity, permanence, firm-rootedness, but also being “rooted to the spot”), old age, personality, and finally death and rebirth.” [CGJung].
It was a symbol taken up in many an alchemical treatise to signify the development of The Work, the Opus, and was often called The Philosophical Tree as the gold (goal) was called The Philosophical Gold. It was said to grow out of the salt water with a golden trunk and seven branches with the sun and moon as fruit.
There are not many cultures who do not have a tree included either in a creation myth or a significant fairy story for, presumably, the tree was our first home or shelter. Even in places where no tree grows naturally, their imagery is included in myth.
“In so far as the tree symbolizes the Opus and the transformation process “tam ethice quam physice” (both morally and physically), it also signifies the life process in general. It’s identity with Mercurius, the spiritus vegetativus, confirms this view. Since the Opus is a life, death, and rebirth mystery, the tree as well acquires this significance and in addition the quality of wisdom...” [CGJung].
Well, this is just some philosophical background into why I have called my build at IBM Tree of Trees. Add to that my feeling for trees, in general, and it’s not so hard to see why I have spent three years trying to improve the basic bio-diversity of the very dodgy flora I first encountered when I came to SL.
I think my build at IBM is a sort of milestone, it says, well, this is how far I’ve got so far.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have building it.
- Soror Nishi

The people are talking:
Chestnut's Choices 9/9 - 9/15 via New World Notes:
"On Saturday 9/11 at Noon soror Nishi's new exhibt Tree of Trees opens. Soror Nishi's work captivated my interest from the first time I saw it early in my SL experience. She uses Blender and Photoshop to make her pieces, preferring to paint textures rather than photograph them. Soror creates trees and landscapes but they are nothing like what you might expect to find in the countryside in the atomic world. Her colorful work is art that is only possible in the creative space of a virtual world.
Music for the Opening Party will be provided by DJ Tasty Hax beginning at noon with a show by DJ Doubledown Tandino at 1pm. At 3pm the fantastic live band The Born Again Pagans will entertain visitors to this otherworldy, colorful exhibit. I know you will enjoy this stunning exhibit as much as I did, especially with fantastic music as the backdrop to your experience. In IBM Exhibit C."

I'll be away for awhile - A Doubledown Tandino Hiatus
As life progresses (first life, that is), and as Second Life progresses (with the 2.0 viewer), I unfortunately have to take a leave of absence from the virtual world.
As some of you know, I have been working my way towards moving, living, and working in New York City. Phase 1 is complete; I'm packed, and I've left for the big apple....
You would think phase 2 would be unpacking at my new place in Manhattan and getting right back into Second Life.... but, there is no phase 2 yet. Apparently I find myself in nomad/gypsy mode.... ok, let's just call it what it is... I'm homeless.
That's the simple truth.... I've left where I was living in South Jersey, packed up one bag of clothes, and traveled to NYC with no set home. Some people are congratulating me on this... some people say I have a lot of guts.... some people say I'm following my dreams...
I have to admit, I'm nervous and overwhelmed as hell. As I said on my facebook wall: "Either I'm going to eat the big apple, or the big apple is going to eat me"
With all that being said, I will be sparse in Second Life. I won't be available to DJ live inworld for some time until my real life has stabilized. I will pop inworld where wifi allows to check on things, try to attend events, and make sure my company Ravelong is running smoothly. And, I will be back, you can count on that.
And I'll leave you with this: Two 10 minute Electro House mixes. These were filmed simply to do it. I knew I wouldn't be DJing for awhile, and I was going to pack up my music and gear... so here's two mini-mixers for ya. Enjoy:
I may or may not take a break from this blog for awhile too... I haven't decided yet. I know I won't be in touch with what is going on in Second Life... but who knows.... maybe I'll still find interesting things to post about.

*Who’s the Band* - Interview with Brad Reason
Who’s the Band – Brad Reason
Posted by Karen in Who's The Band of http://blazingminds.co.uk
Ever popular than ever I’m proud to bring another in my series of “Who’s the Band” and this week I bring you an interview with Brad Reason, so I’m going to stop rambling on and get on with the interview..
Q: So how did you come upon the name of your band? Is it the first name you chose?
A: I stuck with my name, Brad Reason. Then there was a time where I was doing a lot more DJ work, so I decided to pick a DJ name, and I went with DJ Doubledown. I loved the movie “Swingers” so I went with Doubledown. When I entered Second Life to begin my virtual world performance career, I used the first name Doubledown, and then at registration, I was given the option of several last names. I picked Tandino. So, my name became Doubledown Tandino in the virtual world, Second Life. In the real world, I stick with Brad Reason.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself?
A: I’m Brad Reason, solo-artist. I am a digital electronic music composer, producer, editor and remixer. I have collaborated with many other musicians, singers, and music artists over the years as well.
Q: So what genre of music would you say you are in and who are your major influences?
A: I create all forms of instrumental and electronica music which includes house, breakbeat, drum-n-bass, trip-hop, chillout, nujazz, avant-garde, and experimental.
My influences stem from The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Air, Talvin Singh, Medeski Martin & Wood, jazz legends such as Miles Davis and Coltrane, and funk legends such as Commodores, Ohio Players, and James Brown
Q: How long have you been performing/producing music? What inspired to to produce your style of music?
A: I began creating music on computer in 1996 with now ancient spread-sheet based sampling software . By 1997 I was creating music and sharing with with like minded communities on the internet.
Q: Are you signed to a record label (Indie or major)?
A: I am not signed by any record label, but I have had some of my individual tracks signed and released through a label or distribution company.
Q: Have your ever performed live? If so where and to how many?
A: I’ve performed live non-stop since I started. A lot of the shows I do are also DJ based, so I mix DJing with original music and remixing. From 2000-2006 I was DJing on the East Coast of USA, primarily in Baltimore, Maryland. From 2006 to current, I perform live online to people across the world through virtual worlds such as Second Life.
Q: Who writes/produces the music and/or lyrics to your tracks?
A: I create and compose everything I make.
Q: How would you describe your music-making process?
A: I have no process. I simply either get in the mood to create some music, or I have some sounds or beats in my head and I want to lay them out and record.
Q: What has been your biggest challenge as an artist? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
A: I wouldn’t say I have had many challenges. If anything, I would say that it is sometimes tough to stick within one mainstream style. Usually I like to push the boundaries of music, and make what isn’t the normal standard. I like to create what I want to hear, which may not be considered a mainstream hit. Sometimes, it is tough to garner a large fan base because each of my music pieces is so varied in style and genre.
Q: What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
A: Not at all. I have no interest in fame and fortune. I simply want people to listen, appreciate, and respect my music as art.
Q: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
A: Stop waiting around and thinking about it. Just start!
Q: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
A: http://reverbnation.com/BradReason for over 90 of my original tracks. Currently I am running a contest. I am giving away my not-yet-released new 2010 album for free. The top 5 people that listen to the most songs on my page between now and March 15th will receive the digital copy of my new album.
Q: Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
A: I would like to thank all of the Second Life music performers, supporters, and fans. The live music community in Second Life is thriving, and without their constant daily support, I would not have been able to maintain performing live in SL for so long. Also the inspiration for the tunes on my new album came entirely from my experiences in Second Life.
Q: Any last words?
A: thank you

In Case You Missed it: Second Life Press Highlights from the Week of February 22
In Case You Missed it: Second Life Press Highlights from the Week of February 22
Viewer 2 launched in beta on Tuesday, with some great press attention. One of my favorite pieces was Robert Scoble's video interview with M Linden, which you can watch over at Building 43. Robert took the time to visit the Lab on Battery Street here in San Francisco last Friday to film the interview, and he and M had a great conversation. Mitch Wagner (aka the Copper Robot) also published a thoughtful review of Viewer 2 (and a follow-up) for Computerworld after having interviewed T Linden inworld. There's so much more good stuff on this topic - including great posts from well-known Second Life bloggers, so please do check out the archive for more. Next week, you can check out Amanda Linden and Esbee Linden on Wednesday's episode of Metanomics, where they'll be talking more about Viewer 2 and the beta launch.
If you're following @SLBallyhoo on Twitter, you may already seen a great CNN Money segment about Second Life DJ Doubledown Tandino as part of their 'Best Job's series. Congratulations on the great coverage, Doubledown!

Buddhist magazine the Shambhala Sun carried an article sharing one Buddhist's experience exploring Second Life. In it, the author (pictured right, from the site) writes that he joined a discussion with about 20 other avatars and says, "For me this was great: I hadn’t met many Buddhists in the real world so it had been hard to discuss things I was curious about." This gets at one of the great things about Second Life - the opportunity to connect with (and learn from) others in a meaningful way that you may not have the chance to in the physical world.
Not Second Life-specific, but interesting nonetheless: this week, the AFP covered research from Stanford University's Virtual Human Interaction Lab, exploring the impact that having an avatar can have on the rest of our lives. You can find the AFP piece over at France24, and check out Stanford University News' coverage of it as well.
Also this week, Ethical Corporation published a post about a new book called The Responsibility Revolution, which will be released on March 15. Linden Lab is among the companies profiled in the book, and some of our internal tools like the Love Machine are presented.

As always, check out the press archive and follow @SLBallyhoo on Twitter for more Second Life coverage highlights - there's more coming!

FreePlayVL - *Virtually Live Music IS Social Media!* - Music In 3D Feature Article February 2010
FreePlayVL – Music In 3D
* Virtually Live Music IS Social Media!*
By Teddi Davis of FreePlayVL
Brad Reason’s music career continues to flourish entwined with computer and Internet technology. He keenly demonstrates social media is about leveraging technology to connect, network, share, perform, promote, and learn. Most importantly, he shows discipline with these social media platforms is worth the effort! By Teddi Davis
Brad Reason, also known as Doubledown Tandino in Second Life® and other virtual communities, recently shared how the Internet helped him get his start, and how social media has advanced his career. Besides being an accomplished musician and DJ, Brad Reason is uniquely positioned to comment on social media’s usefulness and efficacy. Not only does he create, perform and DJ virtually live music, Brad’s also a new media marketing professional. In fact, he’s a full time social media, new media, and trending technology specialist. Since he spends 40 to 70 hours a week working with social media platforms, his experience and insights are sure to help other musicians make use of today’s most compelling promotional tools.
Brad began his music career over a decade ago. “At first, it was more about using my computer and sampling, than about creating music,” he said. “It was for my own personal enjoyment, and the intrigue.” Creating music with a personal computer was in its infancy. Brad started with a program called Impulse Tracker, which was a basic spreadsheet form of laying out sounds and samples. “As I was creating my first music,” Brad recalled, “the Internet was starting to blossom as well.” He started connecting with other PC musicians via forums and message boards. “Thanks to the Internet, we could share each other’s tunes, and swap samples–it was experimental, and avant-garde,” he recollected.
He was learning and growing by listening to other people’s music, and picking up tips and techniques from his virtual peers. Heavily into electronica at the time, Brad was influenced by Aphex Twin, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and Air among others. He began to appreciate he was on the cusp of something big because not only were the people around him beginning to listen to his tunes, there was a growing online community of other artists also experimenting.
When Brad decided to incorporate some of his compositions into a play he had written, he was stunned when he got his first request to purchase a CD. “I didn’t even have a burner,” he said. “I was in total shock that someone actually wanted to listen to the music I was creating.”
And then came the MP3.com Web site. Brad could now upload his music, and create CDs. “Once that site became popular, people around the world were listening, downloading, and buying my music,” he recalled. MP3.com was the first online location for sharing, and downloading music. “It was a social media community for music before the term ‘social media’ was even coined,” Brad noted. “You could technically consider that experience as the start of my use of social media.”
Even though MP3.com got into a legal tangle and is no more, we all know the concept stuck. Brad said he now uses sites like ReverbNation.com/BradReason and TheSixtyOne.com/Doubledown to share and sell his music. “New technology, new equipment, and new software followed–such as, ACID, Reason, Cubase, Protools, Ableton Live, Serato Scratch, and Native Instruments–and now,” he said “the possibilities for music making are limitless.” And so are the ways to connect with an audience.
Brad doesn’t use social media to communicate just with his fans, however. He also uses these tools to connect with venues and other music business contacts. As a new media marketing pro, Brad notes most venues are behind the times when it comes to social media. “Venues don’t realize the potential for using these tools for promotion and booking quality music acts,” he said. Not surprisingly, Brad finds venues are ‘very enthused’ that he expertly uses the Internet to both perform and promote. “I use social media to share my music, announce when I have created a new piece of music, announce my live shows, and connect with industry professionals.” He also uses social media platforms to house his portfolio, bio and resume, but Brad especially enjoys connecting with his fans. “I am happy to respond to comments, and keep the lines of communication two-way.”
Brad finds social media so successful, he now limits his use of other promotional tools. In the past, he used fliers, print media, and press releases, as well as posting event info at non-social media based Web sites. “Now, because I am very skilled at using social media to market, advertise, and promote, I use social media fully, and have no need to focus on print anymore.” Social media in tandem with CDs and business cards, with the occasional flier is all he needs now.
“I use FaceBook (for everything), Twitter (for real-time info spreading), LinkedIn (for professional networking), my blog, DJDoubledown.blogspot.com, to keep a portfolio of my work as well as share other people’s interesting concepts, Flickr (for photos and graphic designs), Reverb Nation (for my original music), Soundcloud (for my DJ mixes), Second Life, Club Cooee, Skype, Digsby, Google Wave, PHP bulletin boards, FourSquare, Mashable, and a multitude of other social media and new media platforms.” Brad said, “I am everywhere on the Internet, either as Brad Reason or as Doubledown Tandino.”
When I asked what advice he would give digital musicians relative to social media, Brad suggests keeping all lines of communication open. “Don’t be too quick to dismiss a new form of social media,” he advised. “All forms of social media work. It just depends on how you use them.”
Brad’s music career began and continues to flourish entwined with computer and Internet technology. He keenly demonstrates social media is really about leveraging technology to connect, network, share, perform, promote, and learn. But most importantly, Brad Reason shows discipline with these social media platforms is worth the effort!

I Got a Phone! ... and only to stay behind the times with the rest of the world.
Finally, after 4 years of avoiding a cell phone, I finally got one. I now have one. All that mobile tech talk I've been hearing all 2009.... well, I have a cell phone now, and I want to throw it into a wall. Literally, I am more tempted to fastball pitch this Nokia dumbphone directly into a brick wall than using it and it's features.

What is the current rate of service charge for (Second Life) DJs - A Thread in the Second Life Blogs
There is an active conversation thread in the Second Life blogs:
What is the current rate of service charge for DJs
If you're interested, have a read. There are many valid points from various people. The discussion is in regards to the "average" pay for a DJ in Second Life, and why a DJ/performer may or may not charge for an event.
Just wanted to bring it to your attention if you are a venue owner, a booking manager or agent, or a DJ looking for gigs in Second Life. This thread is also relevant to live musicians, singers, and performers as well.

Brad Reason: 15 years of Original Music now Posted

Over the past 15 years, I created music.
Barely anyone has ever heard the music I created during that time.
From 1996-2006, generally, no one has heard the original digital electronic music I made.
It's now 2010, so I decided to publicly display most of my music catalog for your listening pleasure. If you'd like, have a listen:
http://reverbnation.com/bradreason
I've added over 100 of my original digital electronica music creations from over a 15 year time span.
I would LOVE it if anyone who chooses to listen lets me know what they like. Because I have never had anyone listen to most of these tunes, I really have no idea what people will think. If there's a song you like, PLEASE let me know. Even if there's a part of a song you like, please let me know.
Each composition I created comes with a story; why I made it, how I made it, and who I made it for.... but I won't go into that, unless you ask me about a specific song, then I will go into details.
In the meantime, have fun listening, and exploring my music history and full catalog.

Audio Broadcast Streams - Musicians, Singers, & DJs: Perform Live Online to an Audience Around the World and in to Second Life & Virtual Worlds (updated Jan2010)

for Virtual Worlds and the internet. (Shoutcast)
To inquire, get more info, or to purchase a stream:
Email DJDoubledown@gmail.com or visit Ravelong Productions in Second Life
(inSL, contact Doubledown Tandino)
===
The concept:
It is possible to perform live music, sing, and DJ from your real life home. Many people from around the world can tune in and listen. Anyone can tune in to a live broadcast stream provided they have a broadband connection, meaning, listeners can tune in from the internet, from their mobile device such as a phone
How DJing over the internet and into a virtual world works:
The DJ or musician plays/performs (in any computer software music player, external live instrument or DJ equipment). A program (Shoutcast, Simplecast, SAM, etc) on your computer then sends out any sound going through your computer's sound card. Your broadcast reaches a server relay and this is what is needed to stream music live at HIGH QUALITY. The stream comes with a listener link. Any listener may hear the music you play LIVE. (For Second Life or a virtual world, that link goes into the land's music/audio link in order for inworld avatars to hear your broadcast.
Why rent one of your audio streams and not use some free streaming site?
Free streaming sites are low-quality sound. You could be performing the greatest set of your life, and it sounds great to you in your home studio, however the listeners hear poor, lower than radio quality sound. Dropouts, cut-offs, unstable, inconsistent low-quality sound is what you ALWAYS get with free streaming (for example: Ustream, Livestream, Tinychat, etc). Free streaming sites and video conferencing sites were meant for voice discussion, and low-quality audio (at audio qualities of 32kbps or 64kbps which is worse than radio). To perform an excellent pristine audio quality live show, you will want to make sure your audience hears what you hear, at CD-quality sound or above.
Free streaming sites do not come with customer service, technical support, troubleshooting, and emergency backup. I do. Now, with our 2010 improved servers and ISP, we are running at 100% uptime. Some clients that have relied on my streaming service have included IBM, Playboy, and many individual performers. ALL have been with me (some for several years) because of my customer support AND quality of service.
OK, so, how much is this going to cost?
Less than you think it would. Other companies try to rip you off. If you were to do a search on the internet now, lets say on shoutcast.com for example, they are looking to charge at $50-$100 or more USD monthly! That's insane!! I charge what it really costs. Depending on your package, it will cost $12-$15usd monthly (approximately $3800L/month).
Lets discuss your plans and expectations, and I'll be able to determine what is right for you as a live music performer.
