Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker - Monday December 28th - 5pm SLT

Monday 12/28 at 5pm - Ballet Pixelle Performs The Nutcracker
Via Chestnut's Choices on New World Notes

Ballet Pixelle performs its version of the Nutcracker for those of you who have not yet seen this seasonal classic. You will be entertained by mysterious dancers on magic carpets, a Russian cossack stamping out a dance, a Chinese Empresses moving about the stage on delicate feet and Spanish senoritas throwing themselves flamboyantly.  In IBM 10.  [SLurl teleport at this link]

----
About:
Ballet Pixelle

Ballet Pixelle produces professional works that creatively enhance the viewer’s experience while attending a ballet performance. Audience members can see classical, neoclassical, contemporary, and novel ballets that cannot be seen elsewhere.  New ballets are premiered with original stories, choreography, and music with dancers from around the world all dancing together in one space.
Ballet Pixelle LogoUnlike other ballet companies, Ballet Pixelle uses new technology to take the art form into a unique environment to new and existing spectators - the first and only of its kind.  The company performs in and takes advantage of a 3D Internet virtual world called Second Life®. The company creatively utilizes unique aspects of the virtual reality, e.g., transforming from human into animal or growing old on stage.  The ballet uses a new breed of dancers and a new classical ballet vocabulary created to take advantage of the innovative medium.  The dancers are virtual representations of human beings (avatars). These avatars, or virtual dancers, are real people from around the globe – Bahrain, Chicago, Denmark, England, Germany, Hawaii, Holland, New York, Seattle, Scotland, and Washington DC – that come together to captivate audiences.  Many are real life professionals.

By performing in an Internet virtual space, it breaks geo-Olmannen
graphical boundaries and time zones, and it allows new spectators to enjoy, in a unique way, a ballet performance that they may have not experienced otherwise. Ballet Pixelle drives further awareness and appreciation for the art form.

“By the end of the first act, I realized that the same emotional response that real life dance can evoke is possible in the virtual realm.”—Pixeleen Mistral of the "Second Life Herald".

Ballet Pixelle’s debut on February 7, 2007, was the world premiere of a new and unique ballet, Olmannen, an original 3-act story written, choreographed, directed and staged in the virtual world of Second Life® at the Ballet Pixelle's Theatre hosted by IBM (IBM 10 (12,191,21).

How Fanboys See Operating Systems

Audio Broadcast Streams - Musicians, Singers, & DJs: Perform Live Online to an Audience Around the World and in to Second Life & Virtual Worlds (updated Jan2010)

Ravelong Broadcast Stream Rentals
for Virtual Worlds and the internet. (Shoutcast)

To inquire, get more info, or to purchase a stream:
Email DJDoubledown@gmail.com or visit Ravelong Productions in Second Life
(inSL, contact Doubledown Tandino)

===

The concept:
It is possible to perform live music, sing, and DJ from your real life home.  Many people from around the world can tune in and listen.  Anyone can tune in to a live broadcast stream provided they have a broadband connection, meaning, listeners can tune in from the internet, from their mobile device such as a phone and avatars in-world can tune in too.

How DJing over the internet and into a virtual world works:
The DJ or musician plays/performs (in any computer software music player, external live instrument or DJ equipment). A program (Shoutcast, Simplecast, SAM, etc) on your computer then sends out any sound going through your computer's sound card. Your broadcast reaches a server relay and this is what is needed to stream music live at HIGH QUALITY.  The stream comes with a listener link. Any listener may hear the music you play LIVE. (For Second Life or a virtual world, that link goes into the land's music/audio link in order for inworld avatars to hear your broadcast.

Why rent one of your audio streams and not use some free streaming site?
Free streaming sites are low-quality sound.  You could be performing the greatest set of your life, and it sounds great to you in your home studio, however the listeners hear poor, lower than radio quality sound.  Dropouts, cut-offs, unstable, inconsistent low-quality sound is what you ALWAYS get with free streaming (for example: Ustream, Livestream, Tinychat, etc).  Free streaming sites and video conferencing sites were meant for voice discussion, and low-quality audio (at audio qualities of 32kbps or 64kbps which is worse than radio).  To perform an excellent pristine audio quality live show, you will want to make sure your audience hears what you hear, at CD-quality sound or above.

Free streaming sites do not come with customer service, technical support, troubleshooting, and emergency backup.  I do.   Now, with our 2010 improved servers and ISP, we are running at 100% uptime. Some clients that have relied on my streaming service have included IBM, Playboy, and many individual performers.  ALL have been with me (some for several years) because of my customer support AND quality of service.

OK, so, how much is this going to cost?
Less than you think it would.  Other companies try to rip you off.  If you were to do a search on the internet now, lets say on shoutcast.com for example, they are looking to charge at $50-$100 or more USD monthly!  That's insane!!  I charge what it really costs.  Depending on your package, it will cost $12-$15usd monthly (approximately $3800L/month).

Lets discuss your plans and expectations, and I'll be able to determine what is right for you as a live music performer.

Gal Gamers Geekier Than Guys - A study in the Journal of Communication

Gal Gamers Geekier Than Guys

A study in the Journal of Communication found that women who engage in a role-playing game online actually spend more time in the alternate reality than the guy players do. Karen Hopkin reports.

Listen to this podcast:

Download this podcast

Picture a gamer, someone who spends countless hours immersed in one of those online role-playing alternate realities. And what do you see? Is it a physically fit female closer to 40 than 14? If not, you may need to rethink your assumptions about geekdom. Because a study in the Journal of Communication shows that when it comes to dominating the virtual world, women are actually more hardcore than men.

Scientists conducted a survey of some 7,000 players who were logged on to a game called EverQuest II. And they discovered some interesting things. First off, the average age of the gamers surveyed was 31. And that playing time tended to increase with age. Which is also where the sex differences come in. The female gamers actually logged more time online: an average of 29 hours a week, versus 25 for the males, with the top players putting in 57 hours a week on the girl’s side, and 51 for the guys. What’s more, it looks like women are more likely to lie about how much they really play. The researchers found that the gals tended to lowball how long they spend glued to the screen.

So, never ask a women her age. Or how much time she spends defeating the dark elves to rebuild the world of Norrath.

Traci Nubalo - The Word - A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.

A backstage view of the very best in Second Life music, art and events.

About Traci:
Hello Second Life music and arts lovers!

I'm Traci Nubalo and I'm a refugee from the RL music business, formerly an artist manager, tour manager, concert promoter and music journalist.

This blog is my effort to report on what makes our Second Life music/art scene interesting. It's about the people that make the scene happen and how they work their magic to thrill us and inspire us with their writing, singing, playing and creating. Look at it as the backstage pass that most of us longed for and were never able to get our hands on.

---

Below is an interview Traci had with Harrie Skjellerup and POL Arida of "The Originals"

The Originals: "Gotta Wear Shades!"
by Traci Nubalo

"In mid-August of last year a grand experiment was mounted in the Second Life live music community. Scottish singer/songwriter POL Arida, relatively new to SL, noticed that the musicians making up the club scene were playing mostly “covers” (non-original copies of popular songs). POL is a talented and prolific songwriter, and he decided to try to make an attempt to encourage original musical content here on the grid.

The result was an ongoing project that he called The Originals. The opening event featured a stellar lineup of talent all performing, of course, only original compositions. During that epic “original Originals” concert, POL enlisted the future help of longtime SL music supporter Harrie Skjellerup.

I recently sat with POL and Harrie at her Pixel Hill music venue and we reminisced about the origins of this amazing and important concert series.

Timelapse aerosol graffiti by probs from End of the Line

Promotional video for Avatar - commissioned by Casio and 20th Century Fox for the new James Cameron blockbuster.

Casio and 20th Century Fox teamed up with End of the line's biggest artist Probs to execute something truly spectacular on the exterior of the Casio store. Filmed over three days, crowds of tourists witnessed the transformation of the Carnaby Street flagship store into Pandora.

Avatar marks the return to the big screen for James Cameron, the director of Aliens and Terminator 1 & 2. It is shaping up to be the Biggest blockbuster of them all, filmed entirely in 3D with revolutionary cgi and special effects.

I saw "Avatar" today. My review: It blew me Away!

James Cameron's "Avatar" is one of the most monumental films of this decade, and decades to come. Some may not realize it yet as to why, but, trust me, this movie will be so important for years.  It's on the same caliber of movie as Citizen Kane, Dances with Wolves, and Schlindler's List.

The visual effects and colors were the most magnificent I have EVER seen in a movie (the only movie that even comes close in color is a short segment in the movie "What Dreams May Come"). The 3D technology was brilliant, and the movie was not about trying to make sight gags using the 3D.

Aside from the technical aspects being phenomenal and innovative, and the visual beauty, the story has so many layers and meanings to our real lives.

There are comparisons, undertones, symbolism, parallels and metaphors that strike deep into the core of any human viewer. Our societies, our races, our world; it hits home.  This movie has so many layers to it. ( I will not reveal anything, so I do not spoil it for anyone.  I don't want to reveal what I picked up from watching the movie.  You will want to go in fresh and absorb on your own. )

James Cameron spent $500 million on it, and it is worth every penny.

This movie is an epic brilliant masterpiece of this century. You may not realize it when you walk out of the theater... but this movie is going to be so important to the entire movie industry, and will last as one of the greatest movies ever made.

You NEED to see this film in the theater and in 3D.   Do not wait for the DVD.

UPDATE:  This Avatar review arrived on Gizmodo:

Avatar Review: Yes, It Changed Everything After All

This review is a much better write-up on exactly what I am trying to relay in my review.  I am not a movie reviewer, but this review is what I was trying to say.

The point is,  whatever you've heard, or read, or seen in previews, it's nothing in comparison to what the movie actually IS.

Avatar Opens in theaters today - Here's the concept on notebook paper from 1998

Avatar is an upcoming movie directed by James Cameron that will be a big hit with furries and people who don't know what the movie is about.
Coming in 2011: Jupiter Cats
Coming in 2011: Jupiter Cats

Just The Facts

  1. Avatar is James Cameron's first full-length movie since Titanic
  2. Avatar is rumored to be the most expensive film ever, at $313 million
  3. Makes use of new simulated 3D environments
  4. It's hard not to be unsettled by the furry creatures

Cracked on Avatar

The king of the world is back in business! After directing the highest-grossing, most Oscar winning film in history, James Cameron returns to the film industry 12 years later with a film he thinks will change the world. It makes use of all new CGI-technology, including new 3D cameras, meaning that Cameron can basically create an entire animated world and then use cameras to film from specific angles in the fake environment. For us, Avatar probably won't change anything other than our pants, which will become shitstained after watching it. Seriously, look at this screenshot from Avatar and try not to violently defecate in your pants.

We're not sure if its whether the movie looks really good or really cheesy-bad, but there is something about the hype and mystique surrounding Avatar that just can't keep our pants clean. Maybe its the fact that the director of Aliens and Terminator 2 is returning to the sci-fi genre that keeps us interested. Maybe its the gentle, passionate furry love story guns, guns, war, explosions and guns (manly guns) that makes us feel warm and fuzzy manly and powerful.
[Note: At this point, original CRACKED contributor was fired because all of his jokes were about poop and furries. CRACKED hired a new contributor, to finish the topic page on Avatar with a higher level of sophistication. We apologize for the immature first section.]
Ahem.

Avatar tells the story of a Marine, Jake Sully, who was confined to a wheelchair after being injured in combat. He enlists in the new Avatar program, which seeks to combine humans with Na'vi, mystical fox-like creatures that live on Pandora, one of Earth's new moons. Then somehow an epic war starts that decides the fate of the world. Just like every other blockbuster ever released. Avatar has been promoted as "the single most complex piece of filmmaking ever made", "beyond the cutting edge", "the film event of its release day".
However, Avatar has come under some criticism for what is perceived, based on the trailer at least, to be not-revolutionary CGI.

Despite the ridiculed trailer, critics are raving, and it currently stands in the 90 range on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus seems to be that although Avatar's story and characters aren't original, the breathtaking special effects make the plot seem refreshed. In particular, critics can't seem to get enough of how color is used on the island of Pandora, offering insights such as "Dude, the colors are like... woooooahh, man" and "Oh man, bro I just might shit my p-".

2010 Predictions for Virtual Events

One of my favorite blogs "It's All Virtual" (hosted by Dennis Shiao) has posted a predictions for 2010 in Virtual Events. It's definitely worth the read.

2010 Predictions For Virtual Events
"Virtual events have incorporated a lot of on-demand and live video – however, to date, the majority of attendee interaction has been via text (e.g. private text chat, group text chat, etc.).  Many platforms have enabled the use of attendee webcams (a la Skype) and that was a nice start.  In 2010, I believe that the virtual event platforms will integrate with third party video conferencing technologies in a big way – stirred largely by client demand for it."   Full article is HERE

Study: 94% of Enterprises Will Invest in Social Media Despite Recession

Study: 94% of Enterprises Will Invest in Social Media Despite Recession
By: Clint Boulton via Eweek.com

A survey of 400 companies found that 94 percent of enterprises plan to maintain or increase their investment in enterprise social media tools such as blogs, wikis and microblogging tools from providers such as IBM, MindTouch, Socialcast, Mzinga and Jive Software. The results seem counterintuitive in light of the recession, but it shows the importance of these tools for social networking and collaboration, and proves that they are not just a fad in the enterprise. Social analytics tools are also part of the trend.

Despite the nagging recession, a new study found that 94 percent of enterprises plan to maintain or increase their investment in enterprise social media tools such as blogs, wikis and microblogging tools.

Deloitte, Beeline Labs and the Society for New Communications Research surveyed 400 companies that have cultivated internal social networks or online communities, finding that only 6 percent plan to decrease their investment in the recession. The communities surveyed ranged from fewer than 100 members to more than one million members.

Ed Moran, director of product innovation for consultancy Deloitte Services LP and one of the report authors, called the results counterintuitive in light of the recession, noting that while IT, marketing and public relations departments are being cut, companies continue to spend on social software for networking and collaboration.

Companies that go against the grain of belt-tightening by spending on social software underscore the importance of these tools, proving that they are not just a hip trend or fad in the enterprise.

"We call it the anti-fad because people have always been social, talking about companies, products and services," Moran said. "They just never had the mechanism for doing it at any kind of scale. This is not going away and it's not just for kids."

Most of the companies Moran surveyed said they are using social media tools to engage with customers, partners and employees for marketing purposes, with word-of-mouth, customer loyalty, brand awareness, idea generation and customer support quality comprising other community objectives. The need to meet these goals presents great opportunities for enterprise social software makers.

Tools such as Twitter and Facebook are so popular that software makers such as IBM, MindTouch, Jive Software, Socialtext and Socialcast have all created comparable tools for businesses.

Instead of going on Twitter or Facebook to talk trash about competitors, or to endorse products and services they like (although people still do that, to the chagrin of employers), employees are using blogs, wikis and Twitter-like status update services their companies purchased for them from the aforementioned providers.

Moreover, Moran said he is seeing an uptick in the adoption of analytics software that tracks both active and inactive members to derive insights, something that was barely mentioned even a year ago. Socialcast, Jive and Mzinga, among others, offer this software.

"The enterprise is waking up to the fact that it needs to listen and that it needs business intelligence" for the communities, Moran said. However, this is happening in pockets and is not yet widescale, presenting opportunity for analytics tools providers.

Those survey respondents that are using these tools are paying attention to non-active users or "lurkers," people who observe the community, but don't participate in the discussion. Thirty-two percent of respondents are capturing data on how these individuals derive value from the community. This points to a maturation of the enterprise's use of communities and social media.

Moreover, 20 percent of companies Moran surveyed said they have set up "ambassador" programs, which give outsiders preferential treatment in return for being more active in the community.

Despite this maturation in enterprise social media, companies still report having a hard time getting people to join, remain and/or return to the online communities. Few companies are tackling these challenges, paving the way for dedicated online community manager roles.

"New management strategies and practices will be critical, including redefining the scope and role of alliances as well as the overall boundary of corporations," Moran said.

DJ Rafik chops up the Chemical Brothers sample "Block Rockin' Beats" using Tracktor

Rafik chops up the Chemical Brothers sample "Block Rockin' Beats", triggering individual cue points so he can re-create and re-structure the lick in his own way. On the other deck he runs a hi-hat a Gater and Filter (chained) and a Beatmasher controlled via X1. The result is a blistering performance made possible by TRAKTOR and the X1.
