Second Life, the virtual home to over one million residents worldwide, will host an major music festival in support of Senator Barack Obama’s historic run for the Presidency. Obama for President, Second Life’s largest pro-Obama group, is inviting Obama/Biden supporters from across the country for an afternoon and music, fun and activism.

Obama Fest is a drive to register some of the more than 50 million Americans who failed to register in 2004. Obama for President will set up virtual registration computers, with links to online voter registration sites. Experienced group members will also be available to answer questions on registration procedures and deadlines, as well as specific Obama policy questions. Obama for President founder Keith Mandell (Second Life Name Cubsfan Pugilist) says Obama Fest ’08 hopes to go beyond inspiring Obama activity in Second Life: “The goal of Second Life events is to reach people who might otherwise be unreachable, and encourage them to become involved in Senator Obama’s real-life campaign, at a time when such involvement is essential for victory.” According to organizer Sienna Harris, another goal for Obama Fest ’08 is encouraging Second Life residents to give generously to Senator Obama’s campaign: “we want to make sure he has the funding needed to get his message out.”

Blues Traveler: The Story of Von Johin, The Avatar Who Landed A Real World Record Deal

Blues Traveler:
The Story of Von Johin, The Avatar Who Landed A Real World Record Deal
by Wagner James Oh/Hamlet Oh on Thurs August 14th, 2008

"On the Eastern shore of Second Life's French Quarter (SLURL) is a club where Tennessee bluesman Von Johin holds sway. He performs there, and the place is now his; he bought it, he tells me, when the region's original owner had to leave SL.

"I did not want to move," he explains, grinning. He pays for the club with the live music he performs in-world. "I do very well, I have very generous fans." Many tip well; many more tip often. Between two groups centered around his performances, French Quarter and Johin's Blue Note Group, Johin estimates several hundred fans, who love, as this video attests, his raspy, old school blues laced with witty twists. (He does a great bluesy cover of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog", for example, which was itself a riff on blues master Howlin' Wolf. Returning Zeppelin, in other words, to its roots.)

Among those many fans, as it turned out, were talent scouts with Reality Entertainment, a real world multimedia company with a boutique record label that counts albums from popular alt rock group Marcy Playground (they of "Sex and Candy") and 80s metal gods Krokus in its library. The scouts were in Second Life looking for top talent among SL's large live music scene, Wired reported yesterday, and settled on Johin for his heartfelt performances. The company claims it's the first recording contract offered to an avatar, and that's probably true. (The acclaimed avatar-only duo of Chouchou were recently offered a small label deal; however, singer juliet Heberle told me, the label discovered their music on the web, not in SL.)"

Doubledown's Dinky Rant - SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion

Continuing my approach to adjust my blog, I preset the first of many

"Doubledown's Dinky Rants"
... a rant that may be mildly to severly unimportant ( with a sarcastic humorous tone ) but will also hopefully point out an underlining issue that may want to be considered for the future.

SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion was held June 23rd. .... I would have loved to have informed ya about it. In fact, I would have loved to have known about it. Unforunately I don't receive word until I find out about it July 3rd

Thank you Phoenix Psaltery of Metaverse Messenger for covering the event.
Thank you Sansarya Caligari of Second Life News Network for covering the event.

Now, given, in my all new dinky rants I'm allowed to be a conceited asshole so my question to the SL universe is: "Why didn't anyone inform me?" I read all of the SL blogs & forums daily & check the news. I also have many friends that were speakers at the event. Or even friends of people that were at the event? Was I living under a rock that day? So why the hell didn't I hear about it? I'm sure people are going to show me online locations and inworld stuff that shows the prepromotion of this panel discussion... but I sure never saw it. /end rant

My point is that the SL metaverse is a massive overwhelming salad bowl of constant happenings. You can't follow all of the events all of the time however you can always receive the advanced event notice, the invite, or the promotion associated with the event. If I am not receiving your promotional information, other people are not either. Every event, every performance, every seminar, every discussion... if you want the people present that you want there, you need to make them aware. If you are at an event and you see someone that should be there, but is not, IM them and invite em over :O)
