I Don't Think He's Full of Crap, but He Thinks He's Full of Crap ... about Penguins

From Crap Mariner: "DD sent me a really cool personalized track that inspired this odd tale.
Many thanks to Brad/DD, and here's the story..."

Commonly known as the Drabble, 100 word stories are an extremely brief form of flash-fiction. My obsessive-compulsive nature forces me to write them, record them, and then publish them here for all the world to enjoy or ridicule. Recently, other talented and tortured writers have joined me in my quest to combine brevity with what we hope is wit. Every Saturday, a new Weekly Challenge will be posted. I'll offer up a topic or theme which you will use as the inspiration to write and record your own 100 word story. Then, send them to me via email so I can include them in a podcasted collection for all to enjoy. --Crap Mariner

EDIT: The tune is now posted at www.thesixtyone.com/Doubledown/collection/collection_item/14566/?autoplay_song

September 15th, 2007 - 'Second Life: A Guide to Your Virtual World'

(Posted Sep 14th 2007 7:30AM by Akela Talamasca)
'Second Life: A Guide to Your Virtual World' is a new book by Brian A. White, and it's already available through Amazon.

It's got a release party on the 15th at Menorca, twice, at 11 AM - 1 PM, and again at 7 - 9p PM, featuring DJ Doubledown Tandino, musician JueL Resistance, and of course the author, Ansel Gasparini. Best of all, you can pick up free, designed-just-for-this-event items by Ginny Talamasca, Dragontat Zagato, and Colleen Desmoulins, some of SL's most influential designers!

I've not read this yet, but it seems pretty thorough, and I love the design of the cover. If you're interested in anything more than this post mentions, you may contact Iris Ophelia, coordinator of the event. (Thanks, Iris Ophelia & Second Life Insider)

Doubledown's Decision regarding SLCC & Phreak Radio - updated

Here's what I've decided to do:
I, Doubledown Tandino, ain't gonna go livin' by no contracts no mo'.

I had agreed to play the SLCC, and now, apparently I have not agreed to play yet because I have not signed the contract. Do I even need to tell anyone I'm dropping out of performing at the SLCC, because I'm not even 'in' yet to drop out. But... yeah.... here's what I'm gonna tell them.

I may, or may not show up at the SLCC. Don't plan for me to be there. I may come to Chicago, I may come to SLCC, and I may just perform somewhere else in the great city. So, please take me off the lineup of performers and the lineup of the social/music panel, but if I am there, I'd be happy to DJ some music for Stroker's party, & I'd be happy to get up on stage and talk about music and the dj scene in SL.... but I'm not going to sign any contract to do that... and I'm not going to sue Phreak Media, no matter what they do.

In all honestly, I am still in support of SLCC, I am in full support of Nethermind, Flipper, Nexius; I think of them as good people and I'm glad someone is taking it on to try to create a SLCC. It's haaard work putting together a convention, and you learn from mistakes. My own professional real life event production experience includes creating over 3000 events. I took at an attempt at creating one convention once ....and failed. But we live and learn. The SLCC creators surely realize a convention like this takes professionals that do convention production as their profession. That is needed along side with the people who have the ideals of the event (nether, flip, etc). Conventions are hard to pull off right. And I applaud the effort. But.. at this point, I just am not at a place in my life where I want to tie myself to the SLCC. Maybe I will come, maybe I will DJ if you want me to, maybe I'll throw a party in my hotel room, who knows, I have to trust my gut... I just don't wanna feel stressed. And I don't want to be committed to anything but my girlfriend and moving to Florida. Its the SUMMER OF DOUBLEDOWN!!! WOOOO

Below is Taken from The SL Live Music Blog
http://blogs.talksecondlife.com/slimwarrior/2007/07/02/contract-ha-dont-sign-it/

This is in regards to a contract recently sent out to the musicians scheduled to perform at the Second Life Community Convention (SLCC 2007).

I commend Slim Warrior for bringing this issue up immediately in her blog. All of the musicians have been commenting there, so feel free to leave a "yeah that sucks" comment here, but leave your important comments for her blog.

Slim Warrior:
"It seems I am not one of lifes natural bloggers.. or maybe it is just because one blogs when one is inspired enough to do so, (or has time)
These times happen when perhaps happy, downright outraged or mostly general chit chat.. This particular post falls somewhere between sheer horror and outrage and also perhaps under the ‘hysterically funny must be joke of the day’ time.

I am of course referring to the SLCC. Many musicians who perform in Second life have been asked to perform at the convention, myself being one of them.. of which I am truly delighted to be part of.
SLCC = Chicago.. I live in London.. rather far away, so not wishing to wait until 3 days before to book a flight, last week I duly filled in various online forms (having racked around I dont know how many sites to find the best deal)
and Voila! I hand over my hard earned money (saved up and saved up) and grin to myself as I now have flights and hotel booked for the duration of this Wonderful event. Mucho excitement

Imagine my horror when inworld ( and via email) I receive the following erm… document.. I’ll call it document for now.
it was named actually as ‘SLCC Audio Release Form’."

The Contract:
*****
I hereby grant to Phreak Media, LLC and its legal representatives and assigns, the irrevocable, perpetual, unrestricted, global and exclusive license to broadcast, record, distribute, and/or publish any audio in which I am included, on

August 24-26, 2007 at Second Life Community Convention and related events, Chicago, IL for any purpose, without compensation. I hereby release Phreak Media, LLC and its legal representatives and assigns from all claims and liability relating to said audio. I further waive any right to inspect or approve the live audio and/or audio recordings or any printed or electronic matter that may be used in conjunction with them. I acknowledge that I am at least 18 years of age and competent to sign this release. I have read this release before signing, I understand its contents, meaning and impact, and I freely accept the terms.

This agreement shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of California.

Slim Warrior continues:
"Having read through several times, just to make sure I havent MISREAD anything, I immediately IM the sender with” You have to be KIDDING me!, upon which I get the reply to follow the discussion on a google group… so I rush of to peruse the postings only to have yet another shock upon then reading the following statement…..

“If you feel that it is either unfair or something that you cannot abide by in exchange for performing at SLCC, I understand and will accept your resignation from SLCC’s music lineup. I really hope you don’t feel that resigning is necessary, since all of this has been created in good faith with everyone’s best interest in mind. Phreak is, however, a business, and they are hoping to recover a small portion of their costs.”"

The Guardian Unlimited:: We are the (virtual) world: Music in Second Life

We are the (virtual) world: Music in Second Life

Kristan Hall
Guardian Unlimited

Second Life is a stage for many different pursuits. The ways in which the virtual world is used is as varied as the residents themselves, from education and social experiments to commerce and fundraising. But one of the first ways it was used was as a showcase of art and music talents.
Brad Reason, known as Doubledown Tandino in-world, created his Second Life account in March of 2006 and found the thriving music scene within his first month. "I saw the potential, and also saw an entirely new way to perform," he explains.

Now his time is split between performing, going to in-world gigs and helping anyone he can with music, audio, and events. His style is unique: "I do live electronica and blend that with sampling and turntablism. My sound is all over the map," he says.

There are ample musical genres in Second Life, from folk, rock, punk, rap, opera, country, blues, jazz, electronica and pop. But the big draws for so many musicians are the ability to perform for anyone who wants to listen, and the ease of collaboration.

Reason says that becoming successful offline by marketing music in Second Life is possible. "It's a start. In real life it's tough to make it big, so playing in Second Life can lead to bigger Second Life stuff, and it does create opportunities for me offline." It's happened for Frogg Marlowe, one of the pioneers of live music in the virtual world. Marlowe, who plays acoustic folkjazz, was profiled on MTV's You Hear It First.

Michael Kohl is ZeroOne Paz in-world. He owns and operates The Bluffs Centre for the Arts in Second Life. He also performs live music and collaborates with various Second Life artists as a composer. He got involved in early 2006, when he realized the potential for artists inside the virtual world. The Bluffs has two music stages, the Art Walk gallery and features one artist per month.

Kohl says artists can use Second Life to showcase their work to the entire internet-connected world easier and cheaper than hosting a web site. "And they can interact with their viewers to a much greater extent," he adds.

Art in the virtual space encompasses a wide scope. "With visual art, I find there are two different types of artists in Second Life: one type imports their offline art into Second Life. The second type uses the multimedia tools in Second Life to create art," said Kohl.

Art lovers who wish to collect will find a wide range of prices, starting as low as a few pounds like Carl Metropolitan's offering of classic reproductions or as high as US$375 for an original piece by Dancoyote Antonelli. Antonelli follows a uniquely Second Life artistic path, hyperformalism, which combines real and digital art.

So how do aspiring artists and musicians use Second Life to show off their talents? The first step, after joining and creating an avatar, is to find the appropriate enthusiasts group, which will provide an instant connection to those who can help.

The art and music scene in Second Life continues to thrive, and almost every live music event is filled to capacity. The time is ripe for any artist or musician who wishes to reach for digital fame, a goal that can be realised with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Air, A French Band, in Second Life

As reported by The SL Insider, AIR makes their way into Second Life promoting their new CD.
I've always been a major fan of Air, especially their album Moon Safari. The listening room has some clips and samples... I wanted to hear more.
